I am currently a freshman in college, and I cannot tell you how excited I am to go home for the holidays. Like most people I have my standard reasons of my family, my house, and especially my bed, but I sometimes think that people forget how special it is to go home for the holidays. It’s not just for the relaxation of my own home or the wifi that actually works, there is just so much more. Below, I have compiled a list of some reasons why going home for the holidays is actually the best.
No town looks like yours in winter
I don’t know where you live, but I was raised in New Milford, Connecticut. While it is a small town I think that no other town looks like mine in the winter. When it snows and you drive by specific places you realize just how beautiful your own little hometown is. It also helps you to realize that there is nowhere else in the world that will look exactly like yours with everyone’s houses all lit up, and the light snow on the ground. I find myself proud to have a town that looks gorgeous and has its own special glow in during the holidays.
Every town has its own special events
I know in my town they have an event called The Festival of Lights where the local fire trucks, ambulance, and other companies decorate their trucks with lights and circle around the green. During and after the event Santa is present to see all the children and ask them what they want for Christmas.
It’s events like these that only happen at home. It’s amazing to see the community coming together at an event to celebrate the season, and it often gives people a sense of home, which is exactly what I love about it. I think the events that each town puts on makes the town into its own little star on the giant map we will call a Christmas tree.
You know exactly which stores have what you need, and sometimes even the exact aisle
It’s so difficult when you are in a new store to find exactly what you want, and where to find it. I love the fact that when I go home I know exactly where I have to go to get what I need. I have the store’s layout memorized. It’s extremely nice to be comfortable in your shopping surroundings. Not only does it save time, it allows you to beat all the schmucks, who didn’t go home, to the best presents.
You can see familiar faces
I think this is my favorite part of going home for the holidays. It’s when you go to a store and you bump into someone that you know. The feeling of familiarity and home that you get is just overwhelming. Often times it is so nice to just meet someone randomly and spend some of your time talking to them about how things are going. You not only get to update someone about your amazing life, but you get to find out what has been going on in theirs and sometimes they even provide you with juicy news. Familiar faces are something that you long to see coming home from college because when you go back it’s like nothing has changed, and the people you left behind are still there just waiting for you to come back
The food
I put this as my last point because I absolutely love food. One of the absolute best parts of coming home for the holidays are the home cooked meals. I think it is the fact that you know what to expect and it is even better because it comes from your family. I know that it is a cheesy saying that the reason some food is so delicious is that it is made with love, but I honestly think that it is a factor. The food from home just tastes like home, and I love that about it. I know what I’m getting, and I still love it. The cookies, the Christmas dinner, and all the meals in between just remind you of home. I think that food is one of those things that no matter where you go it just tastes better when it is made in your own kitchen or by your own family.
I’m so looking forward to going home and these are just a few of the reasons. I hope that everyone has an amazing holiday season, and that the snow doesn’t get you down too much. Happy Holidays!
