Why I Am Glad I Chose A College Close To Home
Evelyn Paris

When I was in high school, I always thought that I would choose a college that was far...FAR away from home. I wanted and definitely needed a change. I always thought that moving far away from home was the only way to feel like I had significant change in my life.

Surely enough, when I began applying to schools, they were mostly within a 45 minute drive or less from home. I honestly never really noticed how far (or how close) these schools were, until I choose the school that I attend now.

Quite honestly, I don't believe that I made the wrong choice in choosing a school that is fairly close to where I live. There are so many reasons why I am glad that I chose a college that is only a 45 minute drive away from home.

Mom's homemade food is only a short drive away

When living off of sandwiches, quesadillas and ramen most of the time, it is REALLY nice to be able to drive home and have a nice, warm and free home cooked meal. Let's be real, no restaurant can satisfy you as much as your mom's cooking does. Thankfully, my drive is only a short 45 minutes away, which comes in handy when I am craving a good home cooked meal.

You don't miss out on family events

One thing that I truly cherish are family reunions. I love being able to spend time with my family and create memories. Nothing would devastate me more than missing out on a family event—especially if I have to go through the pain of seeing all of the cute family photos on Facebook the next day.

Hometown friends can come and visit

Because what's better than getting the old squad together?

Homesickness can be healed right away

No matter how old I get, I will always miss the feeling of coming home from school and being greeted by my family. I am really glad that when I am feeling a little homesick, I can just get in my car and drive back home. Sounds cheesy, but there truly is no place like home.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
