The best perks of college are getting to meet new people. Yes, it’s hard to say goodbye to your friends from high school but you get to see them for winter break. It’s been quite an adjustment for me because I’m not from Massachusetts and I don’t have friends nearby from back home. How did I adjust myself? I started to get involved with as many clubs as I could on campus and the ones that spoke to me the most was the Drama Club, Chorus, CAB, Polished, and "She’s The First." My high school, had plenty of ways to get involved, but it was competitive and a huge commitment. College has been a whole different experience. Now I’m booking myself up like no one's business.
I’ve only been at college for three months and I’ve already found my great group of friends because of joining clubs. The Campus Activity Board (CAB) always throws big events on campus such as having comedian Andrew Schultz come and perform during our Winter Fest week celebration. I got to introduce his opener and our Improv Club, who opened up the show. Afterwards, our board got photos with Andrew and got to chat with him before he headed off into Boston. He put on a great show and now, we’re planning out our spring concert.
When I’m not having a CAB meeting, I’m either in Chorus or "She’s The First." I love chorus because I always feel like I’m at home when I start singing. Another reason on why I’m in the Drama Club as well. It’s a perfect fit for me and everyone involved is remarkably talented in their own unique way.
"She’s The First" is a newer club that started last year focuses on us girls being mentors for girls in need or who live in low-income countries. We put together bake sales, fundraisers, and book drops so we can raise enough money to adopt another girl. We also have written letters to girls from countries all around the world. Next semester we have a lot planned, including hearing back from the girls who received our letters. I’m really happy I’m a part of that family as well and can’t wait to see what it will offer in the future.
When I’m not writing for Odyssey, I’m writing for Polished Magazine. The Fall issue just came out this week with one of my articles published towards the end. That was a huge moment for me because that’s the industry I want to go into. It's a tough business but when the final product is done, you never want to put it down.
With the semester coming to an end, these clubs have helped me improve in my organization skills and really helped show that I am determined to be a hard worker no matter what club I'm in. I know everyone gets busy with classes but being involved on-campus is a great opportunity to meet new people while helping you explore different hobbies.
Now, it's time for you to get involved on campus and find a club that speaks to you.
