In the past week, it’s been pretty easy for me to spend more money than I meant to, as college move-in and its festivities have kept me busy. Everyone is eager to make friends and go to lunch or buy their textbooks as soon as they register for classes. There are some easy ways to minimize costs in this hectic time.
When buying dorm essentials, remember there’s always time to buy certain items later in the year. I didn’t need my full winter gloves, socks, and scarves now, so I’m waiting a few weeks until the chilly Chicago weather forces me to buy these necessities. Besides, dorms don’t have enough space for three different wardrobes.
Unless you're in a specialized class that requires otherwise, always rent used books and ask upperclassmen if they have certain textbooks. I brought my AP Stylebook from home as well. By borrowing a textbook and renting used books, I ended up spending just over one hundred dollars. Coming from a public high school, it was hard for me to even accept the fact I had to buy my own textbooks in the first place. Going to an off-campus bookstore is even better, as everything will be more expensive on campus.
Finally, when I showed up on campus, I wanted to be covered head-to-toe in my school colors when I first showed up. While the campus bookstore is close, it’s always cheaper to look online or travel a few blocks to find all sorts of college apparel for less.
College is so exciting, but so expensive. With some common sense and a little extra work, it’s easy to save money while you live the life.
