As soon as you get ready to log in to Facebook you see, "Connect with friends and the world around you on Facebook." This may be true, but to what extent is this true? How often do you really "connect" with your friends on Facebook? In reality, most of us will say sometimes or barely ever! Most of our Facebook friends are old acquaintances, relatives, and friends we wish to snoop into the lives of because let's admit it... We are all naturally nosy and curious! We just take a look at statuses and pictures to see what our Facebook buddies are doing - This really isn't making a connection with friends.
Facebook not only doesn't allow for real-life interaction with friends, family, etc, but it also prevents you from communicating with friends or relatives in person. Sure, you do have the option to inbox an old friend for updates on their lives or you can give the 411 about your life. However, you can't communicate every single event through a direct inbox on Facebook. Even if you try to say every event going on in your life via Facebook, you cannot actually communicate your emotions or minor details that can only be conveyed in real life interactions. Nevertheless, you are missing out on real-life interaction and emotions with friends, family, or acquaintances.
Besides the social life of Facebook being depressing, the actual usage of Facebook can make us depressed. According to a study by University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine the more often a person uses social media the more likely the person can become depressed. Social media not only delays real-life communication, but it can also affect our happiness. Reasons social media can tarnish our happiness can be found from a wide range of problems; these problems may be envy, cyberbullying, or even Internet addiction.
We shouldn't allow Facebook to rule our communication with others in real-life or ruin our outlook on how we are proceeding in life. Facebook just gives us a glimpse of others lives, but it should not be taken seriously or used heavily. Facebook may be beneficial to keep updated on what our friends or family is doing, but it is important to note that it can lead to us having a less social and happier life. It is important to realize Facebook or other social media sources can be the cause of our unhappiness and envy.
