My mom and I were gallivanting through the pumpkin patch, taking artsy pictures of each other and cute selfies against the crisp blue sky. How did we get to this scene you ask? Well, last weekend was Fall Break for Elon.
Instead of going to Nashville, or to the North Carolina mountains like the rest of my Facebook newsfeed, I drove six hours home to Maryland to spend the four days with my mom. Originally, I was tossing around the idea going to the beach, or even the mountains. Ultimately, the whole “broke college student” thing that truly limits me from many ventures was one of the culprits preventing the trip.
Another game-changer that caused me to decide to travel back to the land of crabs and O’s was my mom. Anyone who knows me knows that I talk about my mom and her hilarious “hipness” any chance I get (some may argue too much). It got to the point that I guess I post pictures of Karen and her funny comments so frequently between Snapchat, Facebook and Instagram that she’s almost like a ~mini celebrity.~
I first noticed this when my friends who hadn’t met her face-to-face recognized Karen when she was walking around campus (without me) for family weekend. One friend in particular went up to my mom and said, “This may be weird, but you’re Kailey’s mom, right? I recognize you from social media.” Well, that just about made Karen’s week. She didn’t think that was weird at all. In fact, she was flattered.
Anyways, back to fall break. As you can tell, my mother is pretty cool (and if not, go stalk my social media and you’ll be sure to find plenty of evidence). My brother just started his first year of college, so she is an “empty nester,” as they say. Her whole life has revolved around my brother and I, driving us to and from sports practices, school and all of our activities. When we left, she didn’t know what to do with herself. I thought I’d go home and spend a little quality time with Karen. I also had to see her dance moves to her new fav song, “Closer,” in person.
It didn’t take long for her to whip out those dance moves, along with the singing, on the drive home from where my friend, who I had driven back with, dropped me off Friday night. And the weekend had commenced.
Saturday we went to the gym, showered and went to a nice little pumpkin patch where we took the hayride out to the field. We were among multiple families with small children, but it didn’t matter. Karen wanted to take her signature selfie to commemorate the event, then we went out to a classy, hipster, trendy restaurant in my town (which I didn’t know existed- it was new). We finished off the day with a movie night.
