You're The Worst is a TV show on FXX that first came out in 2014. I first discovered it when my dad was watching it on Hulu. The main story line follows two horrible people Jimmy, played by Chris Greere, and Gretchen, played by Aya Cash, neither of whom believe in love, being monogamous, or even being decent human beings. They meet at a wedding and go home together thinking it is going to be another one night stand, however; they begin to fall for each other and so on. This show's humor goes from sarcastic and dry to childish and silly. The first season of the show is what you would expect, Jimmy and Gretchen falling for each other and the crazy drug filled things they get up to. The second season becomes more serious. Going into watching the second season of the show I was expecting to laugh and have a calm watching experience but I ended up relating to the show on a deeper level than I thought possible.
The second season starts becoming more serious when you see Gretchen leaving in the middle of the night to cry in her car. Then when she can't leave the apartment she gets way to drunk and becomes hostile to everyone there. Her best friend Lindsey, played by Kether Donohue, tells Gretchen to tell Jimmy what's going on with her. Gretchen tells Jimmy at the end of the episode that she has clinical depression. I also have clinical depression and was shocked that the show was dealing with the topic. Over the next episodes, Gretchen goes into a funk that she can not get out of. She says that she can't feel anything. During that time Jimmy tries to "fix" her by taking her to do fun things. After a lot of failed attempts, Gretchen tells Jimmy that he can't fix her and that it's okay if they break up because it's not fair to him that she is like that. This really hit home for me because I worry constantly that my boyfriend will get fed up with having to take care of me when I get into a funk and leave. Jimmy also gets mad that Gretchen never went to therapy or tried to get medicine for herself and says that it all could have been avoided if she was on medicine which a lot of people believe but is not always true.
Then the third season deals with more issues when one of Jimmy's relatives die and Gretchen does not understand how to help him when he is upset because she also has to deal with her own depression. This is also something I struggle with; helping people with their problems when I can't really fix my own. A conversation that really embodied that feeling is when Jimmy says (I'm paraphrasing) "It just happened. I'm still grieving." To which Gretchen responds, "I was sad first. I had problems first. We both can't be broken." I think that's really powerful and a true problem in relationships where one person has depression.
Also in that season the show deals with PTSD. Jimmy and Gretchen's roommate and friend Edgar, played by Desmin Borges, is a veteran with PTSD. Throughout the seasons they touch on the fact that he has PTSD but never really go into it until Edgar goes off his medicine because it makes him lose his sex drive and he wants to be with his girlfriend. However, he can't sleep and becomes severely paranoid. One episode follows him around his day when he is dazed and is questioning everything until a tow truck comes and the driver asks if he was a vet. The driver talks to Edgar about trying different methods besides medicine to help him. Edgar later discovers that marijuana helps him but he would stop getting benefits from the Veterans Affairs office if he gets a medical marijuana card. So he goes and tries to stand up to the VA office to no avail.
All in all this show has amazing humor and silly events but also comments in important topics that are hard to talk about it. So go to Hulu, Amazon Prime, or tune into FXX on Wednesdays and watch You're The Worst. I will be anxiously waiting season 4 later this year.
