I, like most people, use Facebook as a platform to stay updated on people I don't see often, share Odyssey articles written by myself and others, and, of course, everyone's favorite, food videos. However, I don't find Facebook to be a platform for election debates whatsoever. As of recently, I've found myself scrolling through Facebook only to see fights and arguments all sourcing from a post with someone stating their opinions or sharing an article backing their opinions.
Now, don't get me wrong. I believe everyone's entitled to an opinion. Everyone is entitled to post whatever they want on their Facebook page because it is their own. I do not believe Facebook is the correct place to post what candidate you support and why or to bash the thoughts and beliefs of others. Your opinion is yours, but not everyone has to share that opinion, which is one of the key things that is detouring me from Facebook as of recently.
Growing up, my family always said there are two things you don't argue about: politics and religion. Everyone has their own beliefs and makes their own choices, and not everyone shares the same beliefs or makes the same choices. That's part of what makes America so great, if you ask me. Regardless of where you are in the U.S.A., you can believe what you want without being punished for it.
Unless of course you post it on Facebook, where more often than not, that kid who was in your algebra class freshman year of high school will make sure you know he thinks you are 100 percent wrong and what you believe isn't what you should believe. But it's not only the scolding for "wrong" beliefs or opinions by someone who believes the opposite of you that really makes Facebook a less than bearable site as of late. It's also the ignorant and uneducated comments that some people chose to make on Facebook that really make me question my being on the social media platform to begin with.
So instead of bashing out high school and college classmates on social media because they "feel the Bern" or want to "make America great again," let's go back to the basis of on which Facebook started with" to connect with friends and family. So, before you tell someone they're wrong or read their post and then share your totally opposite opinion, consider finding an awesome Odyssey article to share with everyone instead of those food videos that make you want to run out and buy everything needed to make the recipe. And save your opinions and beliefs for dinner table chat at the end of the day. Let's make Facebook friendly again.
