I think it’s safe to say that when you hear the word college, a number of things jump to the forefront in your mind – big lecture halls, crazy loud parties, late night coffee runs, and getting to wear sweats to class. It’s that last one that’s never really resonated with me. I study fashion, and clothes are something I’m very passionate about and am often fascinated by. Because of this, getting dressed every day is something I very much look forward to and a lot of times people see this as me “trying too hard” or “trying to impress people.” Whether you study fashion or not, I see no problem with wanting to dress up for class. Maybe not even dress up, but just wear what you want, not what’s “normal” by college standards.
It all really comes down to this: What are you most comfortable in? That’s all that matters. Yes, while I find sweats to be incredibly comfortable and cozy, I feel terribly uncomfortable wearing them in public. I don’t know why, it’s just how I am and how I’ve always been. That isn’t a bad thing. It’s important to remember that people aren’t always dressing up to impress people. I couldn’t care less what people think of my clothes – all I think of when I put something on my body is how I feel in it. This isn’t some new concept or some earth-shattering idea, it’s just one that is often neglected to be considered when it comes to getting dressed for class.
So wear that dress, throw on those heels, or snuggle up in those sweatpants – it doesn’t matter a lick what you wear. It also doesn’t matter what other people wear so if you see someone looking particularly “dressed up” on a given day, there’s no reason to ask “Oh what’s the occasion?” There doesn’t need to ever be an occasion to want to feel good, if even just in a class lecture hall taking notes.
