Why Don’t We "Unplug"?

Everyone always seems to have their phones glued to their hands.

Why Don’t We "Unplug"?
Francheska Medina

Anywhere you go, someone has a phone in their hand or a tablet or laptop in their lap. It’s inevitable in today’s world, especially on college campuses. Our current generation is really the first to have what we consider such advanced technology. Walking to class, I can’t go one step without seeing someone with their ear buds in or headphones on, texting a friend or family member, talking to someone whether it be through video chat or an actual phone call, and I wonder. I wonder why we feel the need to always have music constantly playing in our ears, why we feel the need to remain connected to someone, even passively on social media.

I wonder what our campus looked like five, ten, even twenty years ago. I know there weren’t many cell phones twenty years ago. Would people actually look up and say hi and smile to the people they were passing? Did they hang out between classes, in the grass, and have actual conversations that weren’t interrupted by someone sending a text or showing everyone else the funny cat video on their phone?

I admit, I too am guilty of doing what I question. In fact, I’m using the social media to promote my article, so what am I talking about right? Still, I want to know what it would be like if people actually took out their ear buds and listened to the world around them, or if they took their eyes off their phone screens and saw what was going on around them. What would that look like? I don’t know, and I don’t know who would, but maybe we could all find out? Who knows what might happen if we were to just “unplug” for a day.

Maybe it's time to "unplug."

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
