I'm A Single Girl And I Don't Hate Valentine's Day

"I don't hate Valentine's day."

Whenever I tell people this, they assume its because I have a boyfriend to spend the Hallmark holiday with. Imagine their faces then when I tell them that I, in fact, do not, and never have had, a boyfriend.

As an 18-year-old freshman in college, all my friends are either in committed relationships or single AF. Of course, the ones who are in relationships are making plans with their boyfriends for the holiday, while the single ladies talk about crying while watching Nicolas Sparks movies. I am neither of these girls.

Society has built this expectation that if you are not in a relationship you aren't truly happy, and you can't be happy for those around you who are. I refuse to cave into this stigma. What good does complaining about the happiness of your friends do for you? Even though I do think Valentine's day is a slightly overrated Hallmark holiday, I think the sentiment is sweet even if you don't have a significant other to spend it with. Valentine's is just a holiday to show someone how much they mean to you, and that person doesn't have to be your boyfriend.

Growing up my mom did such a good job at making Valentine's day fun for the four of us kids. It always meant heart shaped pancakes for breakfast, heart shaped sandwiches for lunch, and heart shaped cookies after dinner. Never once growing up did I think that just because I didn't have a special person to spend Valentine's day with that I wasn't supposed to like the holiday.

Instead of being picked up by a sweet guy holding chocolate and flowers and going out to dinner, I'll be hanging out in my dorm, probably watching Gilmore Girls baking cookies with my best friends. Instead of stressing about what to get my boyfriend, I'll be mailing out 2 foot cards to my best friends to remind them of everything I'm writing about now.

Valentine's day isn't just about spending time with your significant other, its about showing people around you how much they mean to you, and that's something I believe everyone should be able to get behind.
