For the first 13 years of my life, I had the cutest, furriest, most amazing family member named Candi, a German Shepherd and Chow mix. She used to hide in the bathroom during thunderstorms, always licked the crumbs off the floor whenever I'd drop them, and she would always greet you with excitement when you came to the door. My family got her shortly before I was born, so we grew up together. I didn't know what life without a dog was like until we had to put her down when I was in the eighth grade. Since then, I've learned just how much more I prefer dogs over people.
1. They're entertaining.
If a human did this, it would be weird. Since it's a dog, it's really funny to watch. You eat that kibble, my furry friend. Enjoy your feast.
2. They're great companions when you're out in the snow.
I used to love watching Candi attempt to jump over the ever-growing snow piles in my backyard at home. She would eventually figure out that she could eat the snow. She made progress by doing that, but she could never get over the piles.
3. A dog's smile is genuine.
When a dog smiles at you, it's because they're truly happy. Candi used to smile when we'd give her peanut butter in her Kong toy. She loved peanut butter.
4. They're great listeners.
They might not know what to say (bah-dum, tsss), but they always know when to give you kisses. They also know that you feel better when you rub their belly. (It's a win-win situation, really.)
5. They're fun to go swimming with.
I never went swimming with Candi, but my friends have taken their dogs swimming, and I've heard nothing but positive things about their experiences. One day, I will take my future dogs swimming.
6. Dogs are so cute when they sleep.
I used to love watching Candi sleep in the crate we had for her. We had a cute little bed in it for her so she would be comfortable and warm, and she would curl up against the side of it. She used to have puppy terrors sometimes, which were also cute, but sad at the same time.
7. They're your best friend for their whole life.
This was my best friend of 13 years. Isn't she the cutest? Even though she used to shed a lot, bark a lot, and steal food from my plate, she was the best dog anyone could ask for. I loved coming home to her jumping on me. Having to put down an important member of your family is one of the worst experiences you could ever have, but getting to experience her entire life along with her made it all worth it. My family will always cherish the memories we have of her. We still cannot fathom replacing her.
