Why My Dog Is My Soulmate

A man's best friend around every corner of life.

Why My Dog Is My Soulmate
Omar Meza

Growing up, everyone has always wanted to have a furry companion to have by their side. In movies, we see kids with dogs who walk by their side as they walk to school or when they go on adventures. We see kids with their cats cuddled up on the couch on a cold, winter night. And we see these furry little friends everywhere in media and around our neighborhood.

When I was younger, I wanted a dog so badly. I would ask every once in a while for my parents to get one, and one day, we did. My grandmother had given my mother and father her two-year-old dog. His name was Petee, a black and brown Dachshund that we grew to love so much. He was full of energy, excitement and constantly full of cuddles. This was just the beginning of my obsession and love I have for dogs. After Petee, came four more dogs. Lobo, Luna, Coyote and Lucero; all Dachshunds.

The love I had for each dog was unique. Lobo was our little "Tubby," being a little overweight and always cranky, but we loved him because of his dancing he would do when he really wanted food. Luna was petite, tall and very feminine. She walked around the house like she ruled it, but she would never get down and dirty with Petee or Lobo. She was always polite and friendly to people and other dogs. Coyote was wild and clumsy. With one blue eye and one brown eye, he was always the center of people's attention. Lucero, also known as Luci, is wild and rambunctious. She does what she wants, we gets rough and tough and she's not afraid to show off the fact that she is really fast at running.

Growing to love each of these dogs made me really value the time I had with each of them. Petee was the dog that lived in movies. He followed you around, he defended you, he would cuddle you when you were sad. Lobo was the stereotypical dog who would bark at the mailman or anyone that wasn't family. Luna was the ideal dog. She always did things right and never wrong. Coyote and Luci being twins, they were always together and they would always fight to the death, or in this case, fight till it was nap time.

They all were my best friend in the same way. Now, I live with Luci and my mother and brother. She's the reason why we get up so early in the morning, because she knows it's time to get up and moving around 8 or 9 a.m. She is always happy to see you and she always likes making a new friend, but she isn't always the most camera friendly. I truly feel like each dog was my soulmate because there never was a time I didn't want my dog to be around me. I always wanted to go home and lie down on the couch and just cuddle up. I've never wanted my dogs to leave me alone or to just never be around. I would never lock them up because they were annoying and I always wanted to take pictures of and with each and every single one of them. My dogs always keep my happy, even if they aren't always with me. Just the thought brings a smile to a face.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
