From "Pop Idol" to "Britain’s Got Talent," One Direction and the English Premier League, the UK has made some great contributions to the world. Lets explore just some of the amazing contributions the English have to the world.
The most significant contribution made by the UK is the English language.
The English language is "the" major global language, which is used in almost every country globally. The English language has influenced the largest sums of people in the history of mankind. All the former colonies of the Brits now use English and other countries have followed suit.
The Industrial Revolution, Shakespeare, Newton, Darwin, etc. would not have been shared without English power. In the contemporary world, the English language is as pervasive as science, technology and economics, and is a major indicator of a persons qualifications in the former colonies (in addition to other countries which have welcomed the rise of English). English is now under great stress as it has changed through various versions such as the Australian, American and Indian versions of the language.
Another major influence the English civilization has had on the world has been music. The country produces the most number of music albums in the world. The Spice Girls, the Beatles, Robbie Williams, Mick Jagger, Pink Floyd, Ed Sheeran and the Rolling Stones are just a small part of recent English music phenomena the world has witnessed.
From the time of the Renaissance, English music has grown leaps and bounds, and has become a major cultural part of most nations. Namely, William Bard was a great master of European Renaissance music. Also, Orlando Gibbons, a massive Virginalist force who influenced a number of musicians during the Tudor and Jacobean periods. Moreover, the English have etched their dominance in the field of music making some of the most sought after musical instruments like the tenor recorder, bass viol and fife.
Simon Cowell, the brainchild behind the "Talent" shows and "X-Factors" throughout the world, is a fierce businessman and music producer who has helped bring about people's potential talent in music. Cowell also is the major reason why UK is edging other countries in the world of music (his most successful creation has been One Direction).
Also, the Britishers have spread their literary tentacles throughout the world with the power of creativity through story telling. Geoffrey Chaucer, the father of English literature, whose old world English never ceases to mesmerize us came from Britain.
Shakespeare, the greatest playwright of all times, shocked us with moments of epiphany.
Charles Dickens presented us with the grave problems the-then-Greatest-Nation-In-The-World was facing. He enlightened us with societal issues that concerned the English, and the witticism embedded in the flowing lines set the pace for the world to move forward on. We witnessed the Romantic Age because the Britishers blessed us with it. Williams Wordsworth, the poet laureate of the UK for seven years, left behind his magnum opus, The Prelude, an epithetical philosophical piece of work of a different taste from the then style which was dominated and directed the future of English poetry.
Currently, we are suffused with great authors such as Salman Rushdie (British-Indian author), who has created some mind boggling, often controversial novels such as "The Midnight’s Children," "The Moor’s Last Sight" and "Imaginary Homelands: Essays and Criticism." (By the way, my favorite one is "The Satanic Verses," even though it created a hell of a lot of controversy, but it is a must read).
If this was not enough for us to be in awe of the English, they further provided us with a range of colorful cinema, theatre and TV programs. And, we all love their cool aristocratic British accents. Everyone knows about the recent "Fifty Shades of Grey" phenomena which took over the world by storm.
And, the Harry Potter franchise, which has been a part of every kid growing up in the 2000s.
Sean Connery, a great legend, who is not only pronounced as Scotland's Greatest Living National Treasure, but is one great statesman who has provided a huge backbone to English cinema. Movies such as Great Expectations, based on Charles Dickens novel, is one of the 20 greatest British films of all time. The British Broadcasting Corporation, the leading media company providing unbiased reporting on issues concerning the world over, is another major example which helps us acknowledge the Brit factor sweeping our lives. Ben Kingsley, Judy Dench, Benedict Cumberbatch are also some great examples of modern English cinema stars.
And, who can forget Royal Navy Commander James Bond (created by the British author Ian Fleming). The British agent in the Bond movie series (according to me the greatest movie series) is another huge example in cementing British superiority over others.
In addition, the British musician Adele makes us fall even more in love with Brits.
The English also made some huge contributions in the field of science and economics, though these lack in comparison to the tech prowess of Germany and the Russian Empire. The whole system of capitalization and economic liberalization can find its roots in the United Kingdom. Parkinson’s disease was first talked about by the English apothecary, James Parkinson. This was a major step in the world of medical science when the UK got drunk in the beauty of industrialization and scientists like James himself got a hangover (trying to crack a joke). Isaac Newton influenced the world forever by changing our perceptions of the world and the universe. He also postulated gravitational laws and laid the foundation of several branches of physics and mathematics.
Darwin, another British scientist and biologist gave the theory of Evolution which influenced the opinions of billions. Darwin's theory is so significant that he is taught in classrooms and written about in textbooks worldwide.
Due to its strong economic background and its root in the Industrial Revolution, Britain hugely changed the economic makeup of many countries. John Maynard Keynes, a great British economist who developed the Keynesian theory in the field of macroeconomics is one of the "100 most important and influential people of the 20th century."
However, the great nation is still struggling to regain its confidence in wake of the two World Wars that shook the world. Vladimir Putin might believe it is a small island, but the small island is pretty influential and has some illustrious things and ideas to offer to the world.
Great ending...with the smile. No, with the sexy Posh Beckham...
God save the Queen...and Britain!
