I was eight years old when I wrote my first short story. Ever since then, I’ve loved writing and somehow managed to incorporate it into my everyday life. It’s not uncommon that people have asked me the question: “Why do you like writing? I hate it!”
My answer is always something along the lines of: “I’m a writer, and that’s why I like writing.” But it’s more than just because I enjoy it.
The biggest thing to me is watching nothing (like a blank piece of paper) become something just by covering it with words. A journal or a blank Microsoft Word document grows into an entire new thing full of stories, memories, even entire new worlds. I’ve always been creative and loved to create new things.
Writing opens the door to other worlds, different realities, and different minds. Any time I’ve wanted to escape reality for a little while, I’ve been able to grab a journal and write my way out of the world. With a pen to paper, I’m in charge of whatever happens and wherever I want to go.
I also think my love for writing is driven by the want to inspire and help others. There have been points in my life where all I’ve needed is to hear or read the right thing. One day, I hope someone reads something I’ve written and feels the same way.
Writing is also a practical skill and talent. It can be applied to any class, any job, and any hobby. It helps with communication and conversation as well. I’ve noticed that other writers, like myself, are able to have conversations and talk more professionally or intellectually under just about any circumstances.
Above all, I’ve found my individuality through writing. No one else can think my thoughts or write my writing. There's no one to tell me I can't think or create something in my own mind. I’m able to be one hundred percent true to myself in a way no one can replicate.
So the next time someone asks me why I write, my answer isn’t just going to be because I enjoy it. It’s because being a writer is who I am.
