Every year we all make New Year's resolutions a few days before the holiday. Often they center around wanting to improve our health, being more fit, and eating healthier. While we all start the new year with the best of intentions, of holding up our resolutions, a majority of people will give up within a couple of weeks if they even make it that far. While we want to better ourselves with our resolutions, life often ends up getting in the way. Our everyday routines may not accommodate our resolutions, and not many people like to alter their daily routine so what does not fit, in this case, the resolutions, just are not done. Should people be more open to altering their routines and making room for their resolutions in them, then maybe more people would stick to their New Years resolutions.
It is often said that it takes doing something seven times in a row to make it a habit. Seven times. That is it. If we could all stick to doing whatever our individual resolutions are seven times then it would likely become a habit and thus more resolutions would be carried out. Saying we are going to do something and actually doing it are two completely different things. Doing it means taking action and making yourself a better person by fitting your resolutions into daily life instead of just giving up. As human beings we pride ourselves on willpower, having the will to make our own decisions that will affect our lives. Why then can a majority of us not have the willpower to decide to better ourselves through our resolutions and stick to that decision with actions?
Sometimes we make resolutions that are unrealistic for our lives. If you do not have the time for a full-fledged workout every day, then do not make that your resolution. We need to remember to be realistic when deciding with New Year's resolution we want to make. Make sure it is something that you can realistically do. If you want to be more fit but cannot afford a gym membership then make your resolution to walk more and do exercises at home.
You know yourself better than anyone else. Make your resolution something that speaks to you, be it making yourself a healthier person, volunteering more, or just remembering to enjoy the moments more often. Only you know what you really want and what you can actually stick with doing. Now that it is officially 2017 think of something that you can do, either for yourself or for others, make it your resolution and try to stick to it. Remember, only seven times in a row make it a habit. Leave notes for yourself to remember or make an appointment that you write in your planner. Even make a New Years resolution with a friend that way you will have someone to work with and someone to motivate you to keep your resolution.
Whatever you decide your resolution will be, I hope you will be able to stick with it and I hope it is something that will make 2017 a happy and successful year for you!
