For someone who has struggled so openly in the public's eye, to open up in such a way takes more courage than some people will ever know or understand. In a world where body shaming happens on a daily basis to women of all shapes and sizes, Demi Lovato has truly opened the eyes of many young women as to what it means to “love the skin you’re in.”
Having suffered from eating disorders over the years, and finally overcoming and rebuilding herself, Demi is no stranger to the criticisms that others feel the need to share. In her latest Vanity Fair photo shoot, Demi was posed naked and the photos were not retouched. In a video interview regarding the photo shoot, she explains that she went from a place where she “hated every inch of her body” to loving herself.
It takes a lot to put your entire self out there for the world to see and judge. And to do that, having already faced the mean and hurtful words of others in the past, takes a great deal of confidence and courage. Demi has truly grown over the years, redefining herself and proving to be an amazing role model to young women.
The media today portrays women more naked than ever. From Miley Cyrus posting her own nudes on her Instagram to Kim Kardashian posing for Paper magazine, not all these women have the same goals in mind. Some say that Miley simply does it for attention, while from the very beginning Kim K has made her sexualized image her claim to fame. Demi has taken a different route.

So from all of us ladies to you Demi, thank you. Because sometimes we all need a reminder about why we need to love ourselves first.
