Why Dating a GDI Is So Much Better

On a campus of almost 50,000, about 10 percent of the student population take part in Greek life. So what about the other 90 percent? What about the kids that wouldn't be caught dead wearing letters and have no affiliation with the chapters that we, as members of Greek life, are so fond of? Well, these students are God Damn Independents, and proud of it.

Stereotypically, GDI's and Greeks are sometimes seen to clash and not get along due to the different social circles, but on certain occasions a GDI finds his or her way into the heart of a sorority or fraternity member, and well, the rest is history. So, why is dating a God Damn Independent so God damn good? Well, here are five reasons that dating someone who isn't in Greek life is that much better than dating your average frat star or typical sorority girl:

1. GDI's don't care what Alpha Alpha Alpha's reputation is.
They probably didn't even know Alpha Alpha Alpha existed. In the Greek community, many judge you on your letters. Is it fair? No. But does it happen? All the time. Fortunately your non-Greek significant other couldn't care less. They have no clue what the standings of the houses are, and honestly, they don't feel any need to find out.

2. You have so much more to talk about other than Greek life.
Your GDI boyfriend or girlfriend really doesn't care about what's churning up in the rumor mill. When dating someone in the Greek community, it seems Greek life is constantly brought up and is a very hot topic of conversation. But you and your non-letter wearing special someone enjoy chats about things that don't revolve around which fraternity just got accused of hazing.

3. They are much more excited for formals and date parties.
These events are so unique and fun that GDI's truly appreciate when asked out to a Red Wings Date party or when invited to a formal hosted at a club. It's not every semester that GDI's have the opportunity to be dressed up to the nines, and they take full advantage of it. Oh, and they own the dance floor.

4. You didn't meet at a fraternity party.
You either met your SO from class or events that didn't involve slapping the bag or trying to talk over loud music in a sticky basement. You two made a connection outside of Greek life, which forced you to step outside your comfort zone. And if you did actually meet at a bar or house party, well, it most likely didn't include a crowd of thirsty fraternity men or sorority girls that were looking for an Alpha Alpha Alpha to bring home.

5. They like you for you, not for your letters
God Damn Independents are God Damn Independents for a reason. They don't care about what house you are in or judge you for that matter; they care about the person you are. Yes, it's cool to attend your socials or date parties, but that's not why they are in this relationship. They are in it for you.

In all seriousness, whomever you choose to be your main squeeze, no matter their letters or lack thereof, be with them for the right reasons. Dating a GDI vs. a sorority women/fraternity man comes down to if the person is right for you.

Everyone has a preference; I just think it's so much better when you are dating a God Damn Independent.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
