Now if I was to think back four years ago, I would have never thought that one of my favorite shows would have been on Netflix. Don’t get wrong I love Netflix like a fat kid loves cake (excuse my 50 Cent line), but I just never thought that I would be that into a Netflix original television show that much. Netflix started to make original shows like “House of Cards” and “Orange is the New Black," but the Netflix original show that got me jumping up and down like a 10-year-old school girl at a One Direction concert is none other than "Daredevil." Yeah that’s right I said it. I think "Daredevil" is the best thing that has happened to Netflix. I mean come on, it’s hard not to like that damn show. It’s got action, great cast, dark tone and an amazing story arc to it. But if anyone knows me they know this is the part where I’m going to have to play devil’s advocate. The question that have to ask is -- has "Daredevil" become the best thing that Marvel has produced?
When I was younger I liked Daredevil’s character from the comics but I felt like I didn’t read enough of the comics to fully have a connection with his character. Then they came out with that 2003 movie of "Daredevil" starring Ben Affleck and that was just… ummm… yeah I really don’t have any words for that crap so let’s just leave it at that.
But when the "Daredevil" series premiered on Netflix that Friday in the middle of March, man that shit was crazy! The first episode was so good that I ended up downloading the Netflix app on my phone so that way I could watch it in between my classes. While watching the first few episodes I could tell this wasn’t just your campy super hero show. First off the fight scenes seemed so damn realistic I even cringed at some parts, especially one scene in episode two of the first season (you nerds know what I’m talking about). Second I feel as though the casting for this show was done perfectly. Charlie Cox does a way better job playing Matt Murdock/Daredevil than Ben Affleck (no offense Ben). Also Vincent D’Onofro as the Kingpin? After seeing his performance in this show I don’t think they could have gotten anyone one better. Lastly the storyline for this show is so well developed that I feel each episode pulls you in more and more so you get to know the characters even more. Now that’s exactly how you make a story arc for a show.
I had a friend who, a few weeks ago, said he didn’t like the show because it didn’t have the same tone as Avengers or the rest of the Marvel movies. My thing is even though it’s not like any other Marvel production, I feel as though that’s what makes it great because it shows how Marvel isn’t afraid to take a different approach when it comes to making a superhero production. Also let’s be real, if you read Daredevil’s origin, you would have enough common sense to know that Daredevil is far from a campy superhero story. His character and story was always intended to be dark and gritty so in my opinion it’s just Marvel’s way of being loyal to the comics. So if you still haven’t watched this show on Netflix then I have three things to say to you: One, get a Netflix account, two, finish the first season before March when the second season premieres, and three, when it does premiere, please do not talk to me all weekend because I will be binge-watching the shit out that. Peace.
