I envy those who attend college in-state, since coming home for minor holidays is a possibility. For those of us who’ve had the dual blessing and curse of attending out of state, Thanksgiving and Spring Break are not doable. Contrary to what some people think, it’s kind of pointless to come home for Thanksgiving.
For starters, my winter break is only two weeks away from Thanksgiving. I’ll see my family and friends then and will actually be able to spend time with them. Plus, all of my friends will be home during winter break, and not everyone comes home for Thanksgiving anyway.
While some schools have the entire week off for Thanksgiving, making a visit home more realistic, I only have four days of break. A round trip ticket is pretty expensive for a few days at home.
Finally, Thanksgiving gives college students a chance to bond, as they can spend the holiday together or crash a dinner at a friend’s house. Students can even take the opportunity to learn to cook a turkey, or, you can just befriend an ambitious future chef.
If you’re worried about being the only student on campus during Thanksgiving, don’t be. You can celebrate with other students and be thankful you’re studying at a college anyway.
