Why College Is The Weirdest Time Of Your Life

As I go into my senior year of college, I have been spending some time reflecting back over the past three years. In my time of reflection, I have come to this conclusion, college is the weirdest time of a person’s life. When you hit a certain age you are expected to leave everything that you have ever known, make major decisions that will determine the course of your life, and go to school for at least another four years. Why is it that right when you hit the age of 18 all of a sudden you are grown? All I can say on that is that I’m 22 and I still feel like a little kid most of the time.

When you get to college and you are thrown into a room with a complete stranger and told to live together. Like why? You don’t even know the girl you are going to be sleeping across the room from. People look down on people that have sex with people that they don’t know, but living with someone that you don’t know for a whole year, completely normal.

Then comes making friends. This is one of the craziest parts about college. You make friends the first week and odds are they will not be the same people you graduate loving. My friend groups have changed so much throughout college I need a flow chart to keep up. You can have class with someone for a few semesters in a row and become pretty close. Then you don’t have class with them and peace out, you never see them again. But by God’s grace you find friends that stick around, then they leave you. They graduate and leave. It’s crazy because you spend so much time investing in friendships with people that will eventually leave you.

Another strange thing about college is the change that happens in your relationship with your parents. When you live at home your parents are usually involved in your life to some extent. I know that when I lived at home I had to ask my parents if I could go places and do things. Now I just do whatever I want whenever I want. This always makes going home for breaks a little difficult. At school I do not have to think about anyone else when I want to do something, but when I’m home I have to ask permission again. It’s weird when half of them time you are expected to be an adult and the other half you are reminded that you are actually still a “child”.

Even though college is quite possibly the strangest time of your life it is also the best. You will meet people that change your life. In the four years you spend at college you will learn more about yourself then you ever knew you could. You will learn and grow and become a better version of yourself. College is weird, but it is oh so sweet!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
