Why I Chose The Mount

Because this year has been the happiest of my life.

Why I Chose The Mount
Mount St. Mary's

When people ask me if I'm happy with my college decision, I often respond "Coming to Mount St. Mary's was the best decision of my life." Though that answer may seem cliche, my choice to come to The Mount has changed my life in so many ways. This year has been one of the happiest years of my life, and I owe it all to this incredible school. I had looked at so many other colleges, but I'm so happy I found the perfect fit. If you're a senior considering The Mount, I hope this article convinces you a little bit more.

I chose The Mount because of its strong sense of community. Community is one of our four pillars and it's definitely emphasized. We're all proud to be Mountaineers, and you can feel that positive energy from the moment you step on campus. As a legacy kid, I grew up coming to various events, but when it came time to seriously consider schools, I knew The Mount was at the top of my list. I have found a family in the people here, and I'm forever grateful for that. Even with the hardships and heartbreak we've experienced this year, we've come out stronger than ever, and I believe that's a true testament to the strong community we have here.

I chose The Mount because of the size. Small schools aren't for everyone, but I can't imagine going anywhere else. I've never had a class with more than 25 students, even in classes that are required for freshmen. All of my classes are in actual classrooms rather than lecture halls, and all of my professors know me by name. I could probably name over half of the people in my grade if you asked me to, and I love that.

I chose The Mount because of the opportunities for success. Two of our other pillars are leadership and discovery, and everyone at the school works hard to ensure you're successful in the future. From our Career Center to our Leadership Institute to our advisors and professors, students graduate from The Mount career ready.

I chose The Mount because of the location. I didn't want to go to school in a huge city; I wanted a quaint little town, and Emmitsburg is just that. Though the surrounding area may be small, everyone supports the school. Whenever you need something, Gettysburg or Frederick are nearby, and what's better than a roadtrip to Target and Chick-fil-A with all your friends?

I chose The Mount because of my faith, the fourth pillar. I knew I wanted to go to a school with religious affiliation, a reason why many choose The Mount. Our Campus Ministry programs are awesome (shout out!) and we have three chapels open 24/7. The Grotto is absolutely beautiful, and if you're lucky you'll become friends with a seminarian! Even if you aren't Catholic, opportunities for spiritual growth are endless!

I am so grateful for my mountain home, and I know I'm a Mountaineer for life. My decision to come here has changed my life in all the right ways, and I love the family I have built for myself. I can't wait for all the adventures my next three years hold!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
