Ahhhh, it is that time of the school year. It is time to change your major! This usually happens around the first month or so of school, directly after colleges around the country have their "add-drop" week period. For those who might have it titled differently at their campus, at mine, this is when and where anyone can add, drop, or switch a class without being charged by the school and without the class showing up on your transcript with a nice big "W" on it for withdraw. Whether you're a freshman this year, a sophomore, or even entering your senior year ... or your second senior year, you have definitely thought about changing your major, adding a major, or maybe even dropping out of school completely because of all the stress and backlash from your family if you ever decide to change your major. But don't fret little one! Here is how I got through it.
First of all, breathe. Thousands of college students around the globe change their majors. I mean we are college students. We are indecisive. We do not know what we want. It is what we do. It was what we were born to do. To be unsure of what we want. Studies show that 50 percent of college students change their major at least once before they graduate. So breathe, relax, and enjoy this awesome gif of NPH.
For me, this is the first time I am changing it (and hopefully the last). What I am changing it to is very similar though. I was a Math major (and I hated every minute of it).
Despite the terrible mistake of majoring in Math, I always wanted to become a teacher. I decided over the summer to change my major to Family and Child Studies, so I can get my teaching certification in K-6 and special education. The major also provides a nice backup profession because if I wanted to, I can become a social worker in schools or hospitals. I have always wanted to change my major to Family and Child Studies so I can teach little kids in elementary schools but never took the action of doing so. I just did what everyone told me to do. Do not do that. Go for what you want to do because if you don't, you will most likely end up changing your major anyway. Fight the power.
When I finally decided to change my major I had a total meltdown. I thought my world was ending. I thought I was going nowhere in life. I was a total failure. I was snapping at people around me. I wanted to break something.
But don't you worry! You'll have time to catch up. Besides, most student in college try to get their GenEds over with first and almost all of them are universal with any major (Math, English, History, Language, etc.).
You got this.
