When I tell people that I want to go into the teaching field, I often get looks of confusion and disappointment. These looks are followed by remarks like, "you know that teachers don't make much money" or "you know that the education system is terrible." These comments and reactions frustrate me, so this article will hopefully clear up their confusion and misunderstanding.
First, I want to say that anyone who goes into teaching knows that teachers do not get paid much. For me, and I assume others who want to teach, money is not my motivation. I simply desire to make enough money to live a comfortable life; a teaching salary would do this. What motivates is the other rewards that teaching will offer. These rewards would include seeing a student who at the beginning of the semester couldn't write a cohesive essay, score high in the writing section on the SAT. Another reward for me would include seeing my students' self-esteem improve due to me telling them that they could do anything if they worked hard enough and praising them for what they do well. The biggest reward would be seeing my students be successful in their lives and careers. These are the things that motivate me to teach, not money. These rewards are why I can't wait to be a teacher.
Second, I'll admit that the education system in the United States is pretty awful and needs reforms. Along with reforms, the education system also needs quality teachers. It will only improve with teachers who are passionate about seeing their students succeed. I hope to be one of these teachers who can improve the system and improve how students are taught. I cannot wait to be a teacher and make a difference in the lives of students.
