Five feet, ten inches tall with a gravitational relationship with planet Earth that registers above 200 pounds and I, Brittany A. Johnson am still beautiful. Society says that I am fat and obviously they are right. What I do not understand is why everyone's response is "you're not fat, you're beautiful." Yes, this I know as well, because I am proud to be both.
The word fat is associated with negative phrases like "unhealthy", "ugly", and "sloppy". Fat is simply a descriptive word that happens to describe my body type. It doesn't mean that I am any less worthy of love, affection, and friendship than any one of my thin counterparts. Titles are something that everyone gets caught up in today and it can be detrimental to the way people carry out their lives. words can have power over people so choose the tone in which you say them wisely.
I struggle with body image just as much as the next human in this world. However,I have fought long and hard to view myself as beautiful and the peace of mind is worth much more than some ignorant comments that may come along here and there. Confidence is key to silence the haters. Tess Holiday, as she is known to her loving fans is a plus sized model and wears her confidence everyday. A new mother, she had to deal with people telling her that "they couldn't even tell she was pregnant". With the emotions that come along with pregnancy and fears of "first-time motherhood", I am quite sure she could have lived her life without those added comments. It makes you wonder just how rude people can be at any given time.
It seems as though others do not view plus sized people as humans, rather objects or fetishes. I, along with the beautiful women of the plus sized community in which we have been exiled to, are neither. Being accepted into the regular everyday flow of life is all we really want but instead, snickers, stares, commentary, and judgment greet us in the streets and in clothing stores. Telling us to "dress for our bodies" or restricting our beauty to just our faces (phrases like "you have a pretty face" or "you're pretty for a big girl") is a shrouded way of shaming. Society needs to do better and realize that we look great in anything we wear because if we feel good wearing it, there is nothing that can stop us from wearing it again!. Sarah Rae Vargas, Mother of two children pictured above, has a great sense of style and shows it off effortlessly in the calendars she has sold, as well as her YouTube channel.
