I was blessed to have lived in southern California for 11 years of my life. From three to 14 years old, I experienced nothing but beautiful scenery and perfect weather. I still hold my favorite state close to my heart, here’s why:
Beaches
Southern California is home to some of the best beaches around. Since I grew up not far from the coast, my entire class would often caravan down to Zuma or Sycamore Canyon beach after school. The water is often very cold, however, living close to the beach is definitely one of the best things about this state.
In-N-Out Burger
Affordable and delicious – couldn’t ask for anything more. In-N-Out is easily my favorite place to eat in California. When I go back to visit, it’s always necessary to eat there at least once. Their burgers, milkshakes and fries are the best I’ve personally ever had and you honestly can’t beat the prices.
Sunny and 75
Where I lived in California, it never snowed and rarely rained. Every day is perfect for the beach, and it is often very warm without humidity in the air. By night, it became quite brisk but is ultimately the perfect temperature for a bonfire.
Hiking
With mountains everywhere, there was always one around that had great hiking trails. When I was young, my dad and I would head out early for our hike and wouldn’t return until dusk. My short, little legs kept us from walking fast, but because of that, we were able to watch the sunset on our way back down the mountain. The views along the way were always astonishing and you could often see the entire city at the top.
Theme Parks
Disneyland, California Adventure, Six Flags, SeaWorld, Knott’s Berry Farm, and Lego Land are just a few theme parks that are within southern California. Because we lived in the center of almost all of these, none were more than three hours away. Every year, my mom and I would buy season passes to a different theme park so we could go each weekend to get a break from school and work. We certainly got our money’s worth.
Snow and Water Sports
Have you ever been to a state where you can wakeboard and snowboard in the same day? In California, you could travel north to the mountains, then back down to the south in order to go to the lake. From dawn until dusk, you could be busy with numerous diverse sports. It sounds crazy, but I know people who have done it.
California will always be my favorite state, and one day, I hope to move back. I’m thankful for all of the great memories that I have from the place that I called home for eleven years.
