It is something that is yours from the day you are born. Something that you own, and nobody can take it away from you. It is your birthday. From the second you enter the world until the second you leave it, that day is all yours (even if you have a twin).
Your birthday is a day to celebrate yourself, and the coming of age in another year. There are big birthdays: Like your "sweet" 16th and getting to drive; turning 18 and joining most of the adult world; your 21st, when you can finally drink with all your friends; your 50th, where you're suddenly "over the hill"; and, more and more recently, the centennial anniversary of your birth with the big 1-0-0. There's also little birthdays, like your tenth when you enter the world of double digit ages, twentieth where you're not quite a teenager but not a full adult yet, and fortieth where you are almost too old to have kids but young enough to still get married. But none the less, they are all significant to you. Each one, even if you share it with another person, is unique and special to you. There are 7 billion people in the world, which means your birthday is most definitely shared with somebody else, but that does not mean that you can't make it your own.
It's a day to celebrate you and all of your beautiful years on this planet. You entered this world in a spontaneous way after nine months of your parents' planning, so it only makes sense to outrageously celebrate in honor of it! Heck, make the whole week or even the whole month a celebration. It's your birthday, who's to tell you how to handle it?
Your birthday means you have the best excuse to dress up and go out with your girlfriends, but also the best excuse to sit in bed in your PJ's and conquer a whole cake by yourself. (Let's be real, we do the whole cake one anyway, regardless of whether or not it's a special occasion. Birthdays just provide a reason.) Your birthday is a day devoted to you and your life: like, good for you for making it this long, let's celebrate it!
Birthdays are more than just a day because a day passes without being recognized; your birthday, on the other hand, is a glorified celebration. Being someone who loves to celebrate her own, and her friends' birthdays, I'm a firm believer that the day is devoted to you. Birthdays are more than just a day because a birthday is you... literally, you entered the world on this day, this day is you. You are your birthday. And you are much more than just a single day, you are thousands and thousands of days put together. You are experience and memories and bold and bright. Birthdays are you, and you are your birthday. Celebrate the day but more importantly--celebrate yourself, not just on your birthday, but everyday-- only celebrate a little harder for the special day.
