Due to the success of my last article, I figured that I would write another one where I force my opinion on you and you take a five-minute break from your studying to read it.
Unlike my other articles, this one isn't really pointing out a flaw in our modern society, but rather pointing out a lack in our modern society. We're missing something. We need a higher sense of adventure. We need more fun. We need to be more willing to make bad decisions. We need to care less about how we appear to others and care more about our own personal happiness. We need better stories. We need to be a little crazy.
Like most of my articles, this was inspired by an event in my own life. The other day a friend of mine approached me and said, "Last night we decided that you're going to be the next Bachelorette. You're perfect for it."
"What?" I replied, considering how I have only ever seen one episode of the Bachelor and spend the entire time watching the NCAA National Championship for football while it was occurring, "How?"
"Because you're a little crazy," she told me. Of course, she elaborated on her point, but the part that seemed to resonate with me was the line, "Because you're a little crazy."
Anyone else would have been taken aback by this line. But I wasn't. Know why? Because anyone who knows me knows that I am actually a little crazy. Some people might argue I'm more than a little. I make terrible decisions. I do things that most people would never do. I'll spend an hour to break into a building just to watch a sunset. I'm crazy. I'm low-key insane. But yet ask anyone, don't I have some great stories?
The craziness I am referring to in this article is the common vernacular definition of crazy; not the psychological definition. However, we should end the social stigma against mental illness, but that's another article b*tchfest for another time. The definition i am referring to is:
Crazy: often misinterpreted as a bad characteristic, crazy is used to describe people that are random, hyper, creative, and flat out fun to hang with.
Crazy. Random. Hyper. And this is why you should be a little crazy too.
Because bad decisions make for great stories.
In the end, every life is nothing but a story. It's your story. Each day you live is a new chapter in this book. If you were to keep a journal and every single day you wrote down the events of the day; what would your story say about you?
Would it say that your life is mundane and full of the same boring routine? Or would it be a page turner that could make it to the top of the New York Times Best Seller's list? Live every single day as you are a character in a novel. Then, make sure the novel is one that you would want to read.
When you're old, sitting on your hovercraft rocket chair fifty years into the future, do you want your grandchildren to ask you to tell them a story and all you can say is, "Well. I always followed the rules." What kind of a story is that?
Do you want to be laying on your deathbed with regrets? Or do you want to sit there and think, "my god it's been a wild ride, but wasn't it fun?"
So stay up until 5 AM with friends and only get three hours of sleep, just talking about life and philosophy. Ask a professor to bake you cookies, because guess what, sometimes they will. (This has personally happened to me twice now.) Break into a parking lot and get high, just to watch the sunset. Dance like no one is watching every time you go out. Go home with that boy. Climb on the roof of Mags. Just walk up and talk to that boy you've had a crush on for months. Purposefully get lost, just to see where you'll end up. And most importantly: never be afraid to try something new. Be a little fucking crazy. Because guess what? You'll have some great stories to tell.
Now please be aware of the fact that throughout this entire article I am suggesting that you be a little crazy. Do not do anything that is life-threatening. I'm all for breaking the rules, but also please do not do anything that will land you in jail for years on end. Be a little crazy, but not stupid.
Because now is the time to do it.
Someone once explained college to me as "the greatest safety net in the entire world." You never have more freedom with the least amount of responsibilities. Now is the time to make mistakes. Now is the time when you can stay up all night making memories with people you never forget, and then skip that class you have at 10 AM. You can get the notes from a classmate and be relatively fine. As long as this doesn't become an every class thing, the consequences are relatively small.
However, once you enter the real world, you can't just causally not show up to work. You can't stay out until 6 AM and be expected to function in the workplace the next day.
So basically, if you want to make the memories, make them now. Enjoy these times with the people you love. Have crazy nights that you will never forget. When are you ever going to have these times again? Remember that these are the best years of your life. So make them so. Don't waste your nights at the bar standing up against the wall, to afraid to make any movements. Go. Meet new people. Mingle. Have fun. Dance like no one is watching. Because in the end, you'll be glad you did.
Because in the end, what do other's people's opinions really matter?
People who judge other people for having fun, probably aren't having fun themselves. If they have the time to look at you and judge you for your decisions, it probably means they're pretty bored in the their own life.
In the end, just let people live their lives. If it doesn't effect your personal health or safety, why should it matter? Answer: it doesn't. So do what makes you happy, and you alone. Because all long as you're having a great time, what else really matters?
So this weekend, be a little crazy. Make a bad decision or two. Wake up with a great story. And most importantly, be happy. Because at the end of the day, happiness is the only thing that really matters.
