When the iPhone became a thing, so did group chats. Everyone was overjoyed to be in a group chat. It was the cool thing to do. Then when iOS8 came out, we could finally name the chats because apparently that was a big deal.
Well as someone who is in more group chats than she'd like, I'm here to tell you that the wonderful world of group chats is not as amazing as everyone seems to think.
For starters, There...are...so many...chats. Literally, everything turns into another group chat:
You have one with your whole group of friends from home, one of the few people you can actually tolerate in your group of friends from home, one of the even fewer people you can tolerate from the second friends from home group chat, one for your college group of friends, one of your absolute best friends, and one of the people who are your friends but not in your direct group of friends. (I'm sure I'm missing a ton but you get the idea)
The list literally goes on and on... and on. I'm in nine active group chats right now and I think I'd rather fly myself into the sun than be in nine regularly used chats.
Secondly, in the beginning, y'all are like "yas group chat whoo hoo. I'm so kool omg." Everyone is thrilled to be in a group chat. As the days and weeks go on, though... you seriously regret the decision of making a group chat. Your life is taken over by the constant "ping" of your phone. "Ping," "ping," "ping," "ping," "ping,","ping," "ping ." You put your phone down for two minutes and you come back to hundreds of messages. It just never ends.
Thirdly, when people actually have a conversation in a group chat, you can't even keep up because it's just text after text after text. And every time you try to actually read the convo, someone else texts in and you're sent all the way down to the newest text. Like gee thanks, guys...trying to participate here.
Fourth, there's always those two people who feel the need to have what should be a private conversation in the chat. This makes me want to rip the hair from my eyebrows off one by one.
Lastly, It's also literally impossible to ever make plans in a group chat. You'll try to make plans but then someone says one thing and the conversation is no longer about making plans because everyone in the chat has moved on to a new topic.
Basically, the moral of this article is:
Group chats suck but that won't stop us from being in all of them.
And...
In the end, we give up and have all of the group chats on silent because we couldn't care less anymore
