As the second semester is in full swing, you might find yourself wondering why you're here.”Do I really need college?” is a question you might ask as your 8 a.m. alarm goes off for lab. It’s completely normal to be in a second semester rut. It’s just something everyone goes through, especially freshman. It can also sometimes feel like you’re going through the motions of classes, wondering what you’re going to get out of these next four years. Going through these feelings myself, I’m here to tell you why you’re in college.
College is a place that people go to further their education. To be an expert in your field of choice, you need to be educated. Some are here for their associates, others are planning to continue school through a Ph.D program. Either way, we are all here for education.
Experience
College is a time for exploration and gaining experience. From educational club trips to first parties, you really get to try new things. It is also the first time you are away from your parents and basically on your own. Exciting right? I mean, what other time in your life are you going to live in the same building as all of your friends?
Personal Growth
Whether we’d like to admit it or not, we’re all going to miss our parents at one point or another. It is then that you realize that you actually are on your own. Even though your parents may be just a phone call or text away, you’re still going to miss all of the little things they did for you (*cough* laundry *cough*). Somewhere between going grocery shopping solo and separating your whites and colors, you’re going realize how far you’ve came as a person.
Difference
I’m sure you’re not paying thousands of dollars a year to not make a difference in the world in some shape or form. We’re all here to be doctors or police officers or managers of a company. We’re here to make it count. Whenever that alarm goes off in the morning, just remind yourself of your dream job. I, personally, am a strong believer in working hard for what you want, whatever it may be. I am also a strong believer in proving people wrong. That person who said you would never make it? Think of them before you hit snooze.
While there may be many more reasons why you’re here, I do believe that it is ultimately going to greatly benefit you, er, us. Sometimes it’s hard to go to class when your professor doesn’t take attendance and there is a new season of your favorite show on Netflix, but part of being in college is having to get your priorities straight. We’re here for an education, not just to party; although, that can be fun at times. You want to make a difference in the world? Do it. You want to prove the haters wrong? Do it! Whatever you’re here to do, you can do it, trust me. Go get ‘em tiger.
