New Years is right around the corner, and I started to wonder why everyone is so obsessed with creating resolutions. As I was doing my pondering, I realized that a new year is a good excuse for someone to start over. It is the one day of the year that is considered a fresh start or a time to create change. We often hear the expression, "Hey, I'll start on New Years." Some resolutions include commitments to physical fitness, increased organization, or a change in attitude. We all make these big promises to change in the new year and we intend to keep them.
Then life happens.
A couple months down the road, most resolutions have died off or have been forgotten. Some may even say, "I'll wait until next year to try again." The vigor and determination falls to the wayside. So why do we still obsess with New Years resolutions that we know we won't keep?
It makes us feel good for a little bit. We are inspired to change our daily lives in some form and that makes a person feel proud of themselves. The fact of the matter is, we should not wait until this one day of the year to make our changes.
If you are unsatisfied with any aspect of your life right now, change it today. Waiting until New Years is an excuse that won't work. Today is no different from New Years. It is any ordinary day that you have control over. Make changes every day of your life instead of making a promise to do so when you can get a fresh start. The fresh start is now. We don't have to wait for New Years to become a new person. We can change ourselves whenever we want to.
So, on this upcoming New Years, make your resolutions. Write them down on a piece of paper and tape them to your wall. However, understand that real change can happen on any day and that real change takes the commitment of every day.
