I am a very strong liberal, and that is no secret at all to anyone because I am very proud to be one. However, lately the Democratic Party has been very divided over the recent election. Most commonly seen with the nomination and acceptance as the DNC nominee, Hilary Clinton has been criticized by many, and lots of citizens are unhappy with the nomination. There are many potential voters that are claiming "Bernie or bust!" or that they will not vote at all, and this is a serious concern to the American people because we MUST do everything in our power to take down Donald Trump. Bernie himself has said that we must unite as a political party and work together to keep a Democrat in office, and not let Trump win. He begs for everyone to support Hilary because he does, but this still has yet to sink in to voters' minds. At the recent Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, President Barack Obama made a very moving and powerful speech to the people, telling us how we must unite as one party to support Hilary, and to keep Trump from being our next president. I truly believe that this speech will help make those that are unsure believe in the same movement.
In Obama's speech, he made sure to focus on talking about how the whole Democratic Party needs unity, and not division. Our President told the people that Hilary is indeed a very powerful and capable woman to lead our country, and that she will indeed follow in his legacy. Most importantly, he spoke of how if we unite, Trump will certainly not become our next president, and with a Democrat in office, it will open up many more governmental positions to fellow Democrats. Throughout his speech, Obama made a clear point to appeal to everyone and grab the attention of every single person listening to him, to explain why we need Clinton to be our next president. Barack made sure to acknowledge peoples' doubt, but came back by saying, "You know, nothing truly prepares you for the demands of the Oval Office. You can read about it, you can study it. But until you've sat at that desk, you don't know what it's like to manage a global crisis or send young people to war. But Hillary's been in the room, she's been part of those decisions." By understanding this statement, you will come to terms with the fact that Clinton knows what she is doing. No matter if you support everything that she stands for, she without a doubt understands the complexity of our nations' government.
One other claim that Obama made while discussing Trump was, "Don't boo; vote!" and I believe this is if not the most important aspect of his address to the DNC. Whether or not you back up Clinton 100 percent, the common understanding is that we must keep Trump from going into office. He is absolutely right, because just booing or talking negatively about Donald will NOT do anything. The one true way to save our country from his wrath is to vote against him! Yes, he understands the anger and frustration of those who did not have Hilary as their first choice as President, and those who are "Bernie or bust", but with this being said, what good will it do to sit around and do nothing. Not voting is just as bad as voting for Donald.
It is known that Trump views our country as inadequate, for his slogan is "Make America Great Again!" However, Obama raises the statement that in fact, America is already great, and we must keep it that way. He reminds us that, "Democracy works, America, but we gotta want it, not just during an election year, but all the days in between." Because we are a democracy, we have say in who our leaders are, and we must take this seriously. It is not only during major elections that we need to care about our government and politics, but we must always be aware of what is going on in our country, so we can continue to vote for what will keep our country as amazing as it is. If our country was not great, so many people would not be wanting to emigrate here and become U.S. citizens. Worldwide it has been known for decades that America is an amazing country with even more amazing opportunities, freedom of speech and practice of religion.
So I ask of you all that are reading this to take the time to really do your research and decide which candidate you will cast your vote for in the fall. I ask that you don't just stand around and boo or mope, but get out there and vote to help out with the campaign of your choosing! The best way to immerse yourself into politics and figure out your values and beliefs is to go out and help with political campaigns, and talk to those helping out as well. Do not listen to others or just copy your political views off of your peers or family, choose who you support based on what you believe, because that is what matters.
