Ever wonder why that one kid back in school always seemed to be a loner? Or maybe they have no specific friends, but they generally just talk to everyone?
You probably pass by them and think, what's up with that kid?
Well everyone, that kid is me. I promise you I'm a nice person. I may not seem interested in talking at times (most of the time), but I can explain this! Ever hear of someone who has an "old soul" ? If you aren't exactly sure of what that means, in simple terms, it's a person who is wise beyond their years. No, I am not saying I am more mature than my peers, I just see the world differently than most people my age.
Many people I know are so in to all the latest technology, new music, the newest cars, who's dating who, who's cheating on who, who's attending college, who dresses the "freshest" and so on. You wonderful people are just going with what the world is evolving in to. I on the other hand could usually care less about these topics. They seem personal and the way most people talk about these things comes across to me as petty and unnecessary.
Another thing I've noticed is how drastically relationships have changed though the years, whether it's families or significant others. On many cases, I can gather a handful of kids who would not think twice to talk back to their parents and curse them out. However I personally was raised to respect my elders. I could never imagine talking back after being asked to do simple chores or favors. And of course I was quickly corrected if I did with a tug on my ear or a strict "no" from my parents. But most kids today get away with it all so easily without consequences or punishments from their parents to teach them how to respect others and follow rules.
Then there's relationships, boy oh boy. People go from one person to another like the changing of the seasons. Yes, we have all had our fair share of boyfriends and girlfriends. But how many of those relationships have been a year or longer? I'm sure now only a few could be counted on some people's hands. Personally I am pretty old fashioned, I believe in dating someone for a long time. My goal is to grow with you, experience life with you and eventually one day marry you ( need I mention any names?). I don't see the point in spending time and energy on someone who you don't see a future with. I could see this maybe being acceptable in high school, but not anymore.
Onto other subjects, cars and music. I feel like an old man when it comes to theses.
Old cars? I have much more than just a general interest. I have such a passion for old vehicles that couldn't even tell you what my favorite pre-1990's era car would be. Off the top of my head, if I had to pick, would be a 1968 Dodge Coronet. But then of course my mind keeps wandering and my list proceeds to grow...
Then there's music. Ah music, that beautiful noise that can change a persons mood with just a single note. I have one of the widest varieties of music tastes of anyone I know, and most are considered "old" in today's world. Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Ray Charles, Louis Armstrong, Asher Roth, Biggie Smalls, Wutang Clan, Johnny Cash, Keith Urban, Deirks Bentley, the list goes on and on. I love the culture through the different generations of music. Especially the old stuff, that's the kind of stuff that I could listen to on repeat all day long.
I can truly say having an old soul is beyond hard to explain, but it's pretty cool too. Thriving for peace and quiet on weekend nights instead of partying and being wild, always writing in cursive, having a well mannered personality with a sweet touch, jamming to some oldies smoking a big fat cigar and just cruising in my car, having a beautiful girl by my side through thick and thin, keeping me balanced in life and showing me how to have a little fun. It's all not new to me, its second nature.
Like I said, its hard to explain, so next time you see me and say "hello", and I respond with that subtle head nod. Just realize its not me pushing you off, you may see many old timers do this if you pay close enough attention, its our way, My way, of saying "hello" back.
