Similar to most people who grew up watching "Full House" throughout their childhood, I was also at the edge of my seat awaiting the first teaser for the "Full House" spinoff, "Fuller House." On December 17th, 2015, my prayers were answered. Similar to most college students, I spent the first few days of winter break resting in bed, scrolling through my social media timeline, being thankful that finals were finally over. I found myself grasping for air as my body filled with excitement when I saw that the first teaser for "Fuller House" had appeared on my timeline. Thank you, Netflix!
I am not afraid to admit that I shed a few tears at the beginning of the teaser when I heard DJ Tanner say, “Gosh, it feels good to be back.” Without doubt, it was the best minute and 15 seconds of my entire 19 years of being alive.
In May of 2015, new co-host of the ABC daytime talk show, "The View" provided viewers with a bit of a background of what viewers should expect from the spin-off. Warning: this may contain a few spoilers for those who have not yet heard much about the spin-off. DJ’s sister, Stephanie Tanner, and DJ’s best friend, Kimmy Gibbler, join DJ in raising her two children now that DJ is widowed. This storyline sounds very familiar, however, the "Fuller House" spin-off is supposed to bring viewers right up to speed.
Growing up a super fan of the original "Full House" made me feel as if I was part of the Tanner family. Each day at noon, my sister and I would rush to our living room to turn on ABC Family and watch two episodes of "Full House". If that was not enough (which it was not) there was an unspoken pact that my sister and I had to make sure the television in our room was already on Nick at Night, so that we could get our second dose of "Full House" prior to going to bed.
As a loyal viewer of "Full House", I could not help but learn a number of valuable life lessons from the show. Remember the episode when DJ and Kimmy cut school to go to a CD signing and were caught by Joey? I sure do. Considering I live in such a small town, anytime I even had a inkling of doing something foolish, I often played the scene when DJ got busted for skipping school in my head, subsequently saving me from getting into trouble. However, that is not all. How many of you recall when DJ talked Stephanie out of going for a spin with her friend Gia and two guys, a ride that resulted in a car accident? That scene proved to me to not become angry at older authority figures when they offer words of advice. Often times, they do not look to harm, but they look to help.
I am sure that we have all heard the argument that children today are missing out because they did not grow up with the same wholesome shows many millennials grew up watching. As someone who has a young sibling who was not around when my sister and I would gather around the television and watch "Full House," I am both hopeful and filled with glee that she too will learn valuable life lessons from one of my favorite television shows. Not only will the children of today benefit from a spin-off of a show that contained profound wholesome messages, millennials who grew up watching the show may now have the chance to get their unanswered questions answered.
What have DJ, Stephanie and Kimmy been up to after all of these years? What about Steve? Who else is dying to see Nicky and Alex? Will Stephanie still utter her famous catchphrase, “How rude?” Just by thinking of these questions, I have decided that I definitely cannot wait to binge-watch "Fuller House!"
