Helping change the fate of children living in poverty.

How My Childhood Helped Me Choose My Major
Wendy Marx

I don’t really think it’s the major that matters. It matters what you will take from the books and apply to the world around you. I am a full believer that I cannot possibly offer all the good this world needs, but the world needs all the good I can give. With the help of several highly qualified people, most of whom I probably don’t even know yet, I know I will be able to reach my dreams.

My childhood

Being born to parents who were 18 years too young came with a handful of challenges growing up. My parents always had to work full-time to provide for me and my five younger siblings. The challenges and experiences I found myself in as a child of separated, working-class parents opened my eyes to the need for programs I want to offer. The challenges I faced growing up gave me the drive and motivation to prove that I can change the fate of the children who grow up in low-income families.

When I finally arrived in high school, I had more of a voice and was able to fight back against the oppression of low-class individuals. I have dedicated a lot of my time and energy to the nonprofit organization Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF). It was with this organization that I was able to travel to different communities to complete different service projects and meet new people. I was able to see that there were people just like myself; individuals and families struggling with the same issues I had been my entire life. The first time I felt needed by the world was with STLF and it was the best feeling in the entire world.

My dream

I am driven and inspired by all my life experiences that I am working toward opening my own child care center to provide child-centered programs for low-income and impoverished families. My goal is to provide high-quality and affordable care for families who cannot afford the high costs. I want to provide tutoring and homework help for school-aged children and teens and parent education classes on pregnancy, child bearing and development, nutrition, and other aspects of raising children.

How will I do this?

Owning and directing (with lots of help) my own child care facility and community education center for families. I will also be graduating from NDSU with a bachelor’s degree in human development and family science with the child and adolescent development option. I also plan on going to graduate school for early childhood education.

Now, as a college student, I work to my best abilities to reach my dreams. I want to make the world better for low-income children. No one person holds more value than the next. Every child deserves all the opportunities the world has to offer.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
