Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated by the vastness of the universe. I used to lie down in a dark spot along the house, undisturbed by the street lights and just look up at the stars. Knowing that each star that I could see has a potential world of its own, I would imagine stuff like aliens, think about God and all the endless possibilities that our universe holds.
In philosophy, there is a theory known as Eternal Recurrence, which was discussed by famous philosophers such as Hume and Nietzsche. The theory summarized is basically that the universe is so vast that there is an endless amount of possibilities. The universe is eternal—it has no exact beginning and will not have an end. Solar systems might collapse but the universe will never go away, because matter cannot be destroyed. In an infinite time span, all possibilities will become real. In an infinite time span, all possibilities will become real an infinite number of times. The current organization of the universe, including our existence, is only one possibility of the universe, so this present state that the universe is in, including our existence has happened an infinite number of times already and will occur again in the future.
This theory that the universe is infinite can be scary to some people. I find comfort in this theory. I see it as an opportunity for me to know that I am not alone in the trials I go through. So imagine this, every pain, every joy that you have experienced in your life up to now, as being experienced by someone like you an infinite number of times. No matter what you are going through, whether it is little or world-shattering, know that it is never the end, and you are not alone. It may seem at times that nobody knows your pain, or that nobody can image what you are going through, but these issues are infinite, and if others can turn their sorrows around, then you surely can. Think about the dreams that you have the goals that you possess and the doubts that come with it.
Whether you dream big or small, know that the possibilities are infinite in the universe. So why can this not be the time, when you achieve your dreams, if someone like you is going to achieve your dreams at some point along the space-time continuum, why can it not be you, right now? The answer is that it can.
No dream is too big or unattainable, because there is nothing that is impossible in the universe. The next time you find yourself in a dark place undisturbed by the city lights and look up to the stars, know that they are more than just balls of flames millions of light-years away, but that they represent a universe where all things are possible. I know that sounds corny, but it’s true. You can do whatever you want in life, because if you don’t someone else just like you will someday so make that be you.
