People love to adopt pets when they are in college. I guess it just gives them a sense of freedom, responsibility and accomplishment. While getting a pet, no matter your stage in life, is fun, it's not to be taken likely. They are living creatures and they have feelings, so you need to care for them and love them just as you would your own child. For me, that is not a problem. Back in September 2015, I wanted to adopt a cat because I was missing my pets that lived back home with my mom. So, I went down to my local humane society and looked around. It took me awhile to search through this whole room full of cats, but when I was finally giving up hope, I met eyes with this perfect little fur-ball from across the room. He was hiding on the top shelf, curled up in a corner. As I looked his way, he just so happened to peek out, and I saw his gorgeous blue eyes. I knew instantly that I needed whoever was up in the corner.
I ran out to grab someone to help me, and they probably thought I was crazy by the way that I sounded. Surely enough, the lady came in and helped me get down my new baby. Needless to say, I was absolutely ecstatic. I held him and loved on him and the lady there said she hadn't seen him warm up to anyone, which just made me even more happy about my new adoption.
I went and paid the fee, packed him in the car and immediately ran to the pet store to spoil him! The people at the humane society said that he was found stranded behind a dumpster, which broke my heart. In that moment, I knew I wanted to give him the best life ever. I named him Sampson and we have been inseparable ever since.
The best part about adopting a cat is knowing that you are giving them something so special: a home. Yeah, most cats are independent and really just want to be left alone until they want to play, but they are such sweet creatures. By adopting my cat, I not only saved his life, but mine. Sure that may sound cheesy, but it's true. My cat has helped me through the worst. Through break ups, arguments, stressful days and countless rough nights – my little man has always let me hold him tight.
Getting a cat is more than just adopting a pet; it's learning how to love and care for someone. You put them before yourself, you wake up even earlier to take care of them, you spoil them and you annoy them like they're your own child. It's weird to say but they help you with your problems. You won't get that if you don't have a pet of your own but it's true. When you have a bad day or something goes wrong, just cuddle up with your pet, tell them all of your problems and for some reason just their presence makes things better.
Even though my little guy can be a bit of a jerk, scratch the crap out of me, bite me and attack my feet from under the bed when I'm unaware – he is the best thing that has happened to me and I wouldn't trade him for the world.
If you're a (crazy) cat lady like me, then you will understand where I am coming from. Your cat is your best friend, it consumes your snap chat story, you talk about it 24/7 and your friends are well aware that you would rather be with your cat than them. To all my fellow cat lovers out there: thanks for loving your kitties so well! Here is to adopting all the cats we can and living happily ever after!
