Over the past few years, I’ve noticed something about our society that makes me cringe more than ever.
Our world and society have become soft. So soft, that I’ve sworn to myself I will not allow my children to follow suit and become lazy, whiney, stuck up kids who feel they should get hand fed their entire lives.
Back in the day, around the 60s and 70s, people used to work hard for their families. You were able to live like a kid and do dangerous things, and the rules were pretty relaxed. Now, you can offend someone by simply calling them a name; you can get sued by someone for the dumbest reasons, and kids aren’t allowed to do the same things that their parents would do when they were young. Anything bad that happens now, the police get all Robo-Cop on someone and feel as though they need to make sure that the kids get in trouble. No more smacks on the wrist by the police, no more coming into a party and telling everyone to just turn the music down. Instead, they fine the hell out of the kid and arrest them, or make sure all of the party gets an MIP.
Parents are the ones who should be disciplining their children, not the police. Kids just aren’t afraid of police anymore. When I grew up, my parents were the most terrifying people to see when I got into trouble because I knew I was in for at least a week of hell. Instead of getting offended by someone and crying until you get your way, people need to start taking things into their own hands and deal with the problems. From the stories that my father has told me -- and I’m sure your parents have told you some of their own -- if you had a problem with someone, you took care of it yourself by using your hands and “man-ing up,” not guns and weapons. You might lose in a fight, you might not see eye to eye with the other person, but it sure shows that you are willing to stand up for what you believe in and stand up to a person face to face instead of hiding behind a computer screen talking smack or hiding behind a weapon.
The next time you feel as though you are God’s gift to the world or the next time you get offended, think about the times when your parents grew up. Nobody held your hand through high school or treated you like a little child. You had to figure it out by yourself and learn from your mistakes no matter what or you wouldn’t survive in the real world. Society rules have changed, but that doesn’t mean you need to. Quit getting offended by the smallest things, and quit being so soft.
