8 Reasons You Should Be Excited For Arizona Homecoming

It’s time to pull out those knee-high socks and over-sized jerseys, as the University of Arizona has begun preparation for its 101st Homecoming, and trust me, this year's is not one you're going to want to miss. It’s a weekend filled with reunions, tailgating, and good times that we hope to remember.

Although Homecoming is a couple weeks away (Oct. 22-24), this year’s agenda is jam-packed with events that everyone of all ages can participate in. Everybody knows that no one can compete with the amount of school spirit that a University of Arizona Wildcat has. I hope to see everyone going all out and enjoy the warm weather with old friends as we take on Washington State.

If you’re in the "Dirty-T" that weekend, make sure to check out some of these events:

1. Home game against the Washington State Cougars

Even though we may not be the best at football, there is an undeniable spirit that fills the Arizona stadium. It must be because we have one of the best student sections in the country. Whether we win or loose, the U of A students always know how to Bear Down!

2. Bonfire and Pep rally

Every year, the school holds a huge bonfire and pep rally located on the West side of Old Main. There, the Homecoming king and queen will be crowned alongside the Pride of Arizona band, UA Cheerleaders, and, of course, Wilbur and Wilma.

3. Tents on the Mall

The mall is so packed that it becomes difficult to see any grass. Thousands of families migrate to the mall for catching up with old friends, food, games, and letting loose before its time to hit the stadium and show those Cougars what we are made of!

4. Homecoming Parade

This year, the parade will showcase over 50 floats, followed by the Arizona marching band, cheerleaders, and homecoming court. This has been one of the University’s most cherished traditions. Students and faculty come out and cheer on each float as it goes by.

5. Wildcat for Life Tailgate Party

The school holds this event specifically for alumni, providing them with food, music, and trips down memory lane. Alumni really seem to enjoy this event, and this year’s tailgate is in honor of the Class of 1965.

6. 100 Years of Greek Life Celebration

This year’s homecoming marks the 100th year that Greek Life has been on the University of Arizona campus. Alumni are serving as representatives from each chapter and putting together events for everyone to exhibit how much Greek life has transformed over the past century.

7. Lighting A-Mountain

This is one of the homecoming's more relaxed activities, as the whole Tucson community joins together to watch as the Bobcat Senior Honorary lights up the big A on A-Mountain. The lit up A can even be seen from some parts of campus and is a symbol of the pride the wildcats have for their school.

8. Barbecue Bash

If you like live music, giveaways, raffle prizes, and all-you-can-eat BBQ, then you will have to stop by this year's bash on the east side of Old Main. And let's be real, who doesn’t like those things!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
