"You are such a disappointment." ”Why wouldn't you support your own?" ”You know they don't like white people." ”They are terrorists that hate white people, pretty much ISIS." ”White people go through racism as well!" ”Slavery has been over for a while now, they need to get over it." ”Stop pulling the race card!" ”Have you seen black on black crime rates? Tell them to stop killing each other first!"
Let me say this, I don't support Black Lives Matter this just for my family, although my family is a mix of every shade you can think of to not about just them. It is about society as a whole. How can you have people come to you and say they are experiencing something, and without even trying to understand, turn them away? When other countries cry for help, America jumps as high as needed. When it's our own, we tell them to suck it up, and turn a cheek.
Did you see the video of Philando Castile? Charles Kinsley? I believe those shootings were out of fear, more than a racist officer. It's the judicial system that fails in this situation. The problem comes in when they still aren't held accountable for the action. Philando's case is thrown out before it ever reaches court. The officers walk free after, being paid, awaiting for their bosses to cover them in order to cover their self and keep the department from looking bad. Instead of carrying out their duty to serve and protect, they intimidate, break laws, use their power to their advantage, and show their badge for public sympathy. I mean did they really say they meant to shoot an autistic man instead of a behavioral specialist that already identified himself
If you are white and reading this have you ever feared running to the bathroom in your own apartment? Have you ever been afraid of riding in the car with your girlfriend? Playing at a park? Making eye contact with an officer? Walking towards an officer or away? Following directions? Calling for help? If you read those and have never thought the outcome of those would be your death, how can you knock someone else's actual outcomes down? The officers can take off a uniform, black people, are who they are till the day they die.
Being a white supporter of Black Lives gets really interesting when there are some Black Lives members feel that white people have ZERO place in the movement. That part does not bother me, for one simple fact, nobody can change the world on their own. I don't blame them for being angry, or not wanting anything to do with me. My ancestors have kept their ancestors from reading, writing, swimming, eating, or even living. I cannot imagine the anger they hold, but it doesn't mean I need to retaliate and do the same. I wasn't raised to conduct myself on the point of revenge, rather show compassion and try to understand that I don't have a clue.
At the heart of Black Lives Matters, it's about justice. It's about a minority truly getting the respect they are entitled to, and that the laws that should protect them, follow through. They are not asking for a lot, the media is making it out to be something different. The media is puppeteering this to make them look like they want all cops dead, or this is a race war. (Which by the way if this was a race war, it was started years and years ago by the Christians belonging to the Ku Klux Klan.) There are extremist in Black Lives Matter, of course, people who are taking it to another level. (Christians have them too). An eye for an eye type of deal. A concept that again doesn't work for anyone, something most supporters of this incredible movement understand.
Bottom line, I am white and I support Black Lives Matter because I simply opened up my eyes to someone else's perspective. I am not a cop hater, I am not doing this to be accepted by anyone. If anything this has caused more issues between people I love then I ever imagined. Truth be told, it doesn't bother me one bit, because the truth to me is more important. I believe in the fact that trained police officers should be held to higher standard. The fact that I am white is the furthest thing from my mind. I am not on anyone's side based on skin. I'm basing this off the things I've seen in life, my personal stories that lead me to know that a badge doesn't mean you always do as you should.
I will never support someone on the shallow fact that we share the same skin tone, I will never be silent about the wrongs that happen, and I will never deny there are things that are happening every day, that are terrible that will never happen to me. You owe nothing to anyone, but you do have a duty as a citizen of the United States to make sure every citizen in this country feels they are no different than the rest. Black on black crime rates are not that much more than white on white crime rates. Black Lives matter is not a terrorist group, there are a few groups comparable but not this one. White people have very limited if any experience compared to black people on the issue of racism. Hello, we are the majority here! If I am a disappointment to you for being for other people's basic rights, then I am doing exactly what I need to do with my life. I'm not in the wrong here, you are.
