Among this year's hottest and most-talked-about actresses is Daisy Ridley, whose breakout role was Rey in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens.” Before playing Rey, she was mostly unknown except for some roles in British television. Since the film's release in 2015, her name has been on every entertainment news site when talk of a new film arises.
So far, she's been
included in the talks of three films: “
Ophelia,” a re-telling of
Shakespeare's
Hamlet through Ophelia's perspective,“Kolma,”
a fantasy thriller based on the 2003 Israeli film “All I've Got,”
and “
The Lost Wife,” an adaptation of the novel by Alyson
Richman. Each are bound to showcase Daisy Ridley's acting talents
through their different roles. There's something else that they have
in common – they aren't attached to franchises.
There was one
possible franchise that Ridley was rumored to star in and that is
Tomb Raider. The video game series is set to get a reboot of the
movie adaptations in the coming years and the role of Lara Croft is
currently up for grabs. Ridley became a fan favorite when she was
rumored to take up the mantle of Lara Croft, last played by Angelina
Jolie. But unfortunately for those making fan edits of Ridley as Lara
Croft, Alicia Vikander has been given the role instead.
After Ridley's run
as Rey is over, and between what other dramatic roles she'll be
taking, the breakthrough actress will have room for another franchise
under her belt. Already, her Star Wars co-star John Boyega has been
cast in the next installment in the Pacific Rim series. Ridley would
be qualified for many different roles with her athleticism and
singing skills, and since both fans and casting directors alike want
her, I'm sure she'll have her pick.
There are a handful
of franchises that will be sure to be casting roles, however, big or
small, in the near future. There are the ever-growing, never-stopping
franchises like that of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The only
female superhero role up for grabs is Captain Marvel. Ridley doesn't
quite fit the physical appearance of Captain Marvel, but there's no
telling what other roles will open up in the MCU with the amount of
films they have planned. Then there are franchises like "Transformers,"
"Fast and Furious," the "DC Universe," "Harry Potter," "James Bond," "X-Men,"
"Pirates of the Caribbean," "Star Trek," "Mission: Impossible," "Indiana
Jones," and more.
It would be
interesting to see Daisy Ridley as a witch in the sequels following
“Fantastic Beats and Where to Find Them.” It would be really
interesting to see her in a starring role in a reboot of Indiana
Jones. While I have no particular interest in seeing new Indiana
Jones movies, they're going to happen anyway, and it would at least
spice them up to see a female lead like Ridley. And while we're on
the note of rebooting a franchise, eventually Tom Cruise is going to
have to step down as the lead of Mission: Impossible. Wouldn't it be
cool to see Ridley take over? She's got the acting chops and
physicality – I say we pitch that to the execs!
I read of an idea
that doesn't seem to be in the cards right now, but would be awesome:
Daisy Ridley as X-23, the female clone of Wolverine from the X-Men
comics. X-23 and Wolverine have a father-daughter relationship in the
comics and Hugh Jackman is getting to the end of his run as
Wolverine. What better way to send Jackman out, but continue his
legacy as Wolverine, than to have a Daisy Ridley version of X-23 take
over? X-23 has ties with the X-Men and Avengers Academy comics, so
there are many possibilities for Ridley in this role.
I would personally
be most excited to see Daisy Ridley as X-23. I would even love to see
her in Indiana Jones, Mission: Impossible, or the Fantastic Beasts
series. And though I think her talents would be wasted in something
like Pirates of the Caribbean or Transformers, I'm sure she would
bring an element to those movies worth seeing. Her performance as Rey
in “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is only the beginning for her.
