Are We Any Closer to Finding Madeleine McCann?
Start writing a post

Ever since I started watching documentaries on YouTube and Netflix, I've become engulfed in the world of true crime; trying to figure out what happened with these people, who did it, etc. Netflix has also released "Making a Murderer" and "Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes" and other crime-related shows/documentaries/movies, and with social media, these cases spread around like wildfire and people really start talking, putting in their thoughts about what they think happened. Each one of these is so interesting and successful, not only because the cases are so popular, but they engage the viewers and get their brains fired up, questioning the decisions made by either law enforcement, the victim, the suspect, or the parents.

"The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann" shares the unsolved disappearance of three-year-old Madeleine McCann that occurred back in May of 2007. Madeleine was on a vacation with her family and their friends at a resort in Praia da Luz, Portugal, when she went missing the night of May 3rd. And to this day, no one knows where Madeleine is, who took her, or what could've possibly happened in the events leading up to Madeleine going missing.

When the parents tucked their children into bed around 8:30 p.m., they headed down to the tapas bar which was 150 feet away from their room where they are still able to see what their children are doing and if they're okay and safe. Around 9:05 p.m., Gerry McCann went to check on the children. According to sources, McCann said the door was 'wider than it had been when he left.' 9:15, Matthew Oldfield, a friend of the McCann's went to check on the kids again, seeing the twins sleeping, but doesn't recall seeing Madeleine in bed. Around that same time, a friend of the McCann family by the name of Jane Turner claimed she saw a man walking with a child wearing light pajamas in his arms, almost the same color that Madeleine was wearing when she went to bed.

10:00 p.m. rolls around and mother Kate McCann returns to check on her children where she notices Madeleine is no longer in her bed. Panicked, Kate runs to the bar, shouting "THEY'VE TAKEN MADELEINE!" And that's where my suspicions started to soar.

Law enforcement was informed about the disappearance of the three-year-old toddler, calling on search dogs, notifying airports and border controls to keep an eye out for possibly a man carrying a little girl. Twelve years later, and there hasn't been many to any leads in regards to Madeleine being missing.

The McCann family begged and pleaded to the public, asking to give any information they might have on where their daughter might be and who they might be with. "Please, please do not hurt her," Kate McCann stated when pleading on television. Soon, the parents were questioned if they had anything to do with the disappearance of their daughter.

Now, I myself LOVE a good conspiracy theory and this case is filled with so many of them. I'll go over a couple.

1. An intruder entered the home

Upon arrival to the apartment, Kate McCann said that she knew a crime had been committed in their resort apartment as Madeleine always went to bed with her stuffed animal Cuddlecat, and Cuddlecat was out of Madeleine's reach. Cuddlecat was Madeleine's security blanket, she wouldn't have just wandered off without Cuddlecat and so Kate believed that Madeleine was abducted. The area the McCann's were staying in was filled with burglaries and robberies, and they were only increasing. It's suspected that a burglar came in through the patio, attempted to rob the place and saw Madeleine wake up and to keep her quiet, took her and ran off. Some say this could be the man on the beach that was seen walking with a little girl that night.

2. Madeleine was abducted and sold into sex trafficking

There are also suspicions that Madeleine may have been taken by a group of pedophiles, who were looking to kidnap children who would then enter the sex trafficking ring. A couple years prior to the disappearance of Madeleine, a ten year old girl was sexually assaulted by a gang in the same apartment complex the McCann's were staying in. Two days prior to the disappearance, there were two men seen lurking around the resort, pretending to be collectors for charity, trying to go door to door and receive donations. Those two were also seen the day Madeleine went missing. Huge speculations also say that Madeleine was a pawn to her parents; raised simply to be sold into trafficking and when she was the right age, the McCann's would be selling her for big bucks.

3. Madeleine was murdered by her parents

Yes, you read that right... Madeleine was murdered by her parents (this is the theory I agree with the most). A lot of the evidence stated in reasons above are going to be mentioned in this as well. First off, on the night of the appearance, when Kate saw that Madeleine was gone, she screamed, "THEY'VE TAKEN MADELEINE!"... Why would she automatically assume someone took her? Who's they? This implies that more than one person was involved in the disappearance of Madeleine. If someone isn't there, you would assume they would say "Madeleine is missing," not jump to the conclusion that she was taken.

Want to know the worst thing? The McCann's barely even looked for their missing daughter. They searched the beach, around the Tapas bar, their resort apartment and then decided to call it a night (seriously, their daughter went missing and they just decided to go to sleep). Gerry and Kate didn't start looking again until six in the morning the next day when Madeleine went missing around 10 p.m. the previous night. Not only that but, Kate refused to answer questions from authorities after being told she was damaging the case. The McCanns then tried to sue the lead detective over the thinking that they were harming the search for Madeleine. Yet again, Madeleine's parents didn't cooperate when police recreated the crime scene and asked the parents to attend. CPS reached out to Kate, asking if they could be of any assistance. Yvonne Martin, an employee of the CPS wrote to police that she believes the parents had something to do with the disappearance of their own daughter.

A fund was made for people to donate in attempts to help look for Madeline. Although it raised thousands of dollars, none of it was put towards the search, the McCann's decided to pay off their mortgage with this money. From the day Madeleine went missing, things were fishy about her case and it concerned me why the parents weren't more worried and looking more for their missing child. She could be dead out there, and you're using the money to help find her to pay off debts?

I hope that there can be something that comes out of this Netflix series and that there are more leads that'll lead to discovering where Madeleine McCann is. It's been twelve years, and I'm not really feeling confident about the well-being of Madeleine.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast ā€œBirthdayā€ on anyoneā€™s birthday. I knew all of the words to ā€œBack In The U.S.S.Rā€ by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. Iā€™m not someone to ā€œfangirlā€ but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
