Valentine’s Day: “Huge scandal!” - says the Times*. “Completely blasphemous!” – rants the Post**. “I don’t want my children anywhere near this disgrace!” – disgruntled mothers everywhere shout in outrage***. "Valentine’s Day is the worst excuse for a holiday and one that must be censored. It’s a complete and utter-"
Now, Valentine’s Day might not be everyone’s favorite holiday- one can hardly pass up the spooky thrill of Halloween, the joyous egg hunts of Easter, or the heaping helpings of Thanksgiving. However, what is so bad about Valentine’s Day? Is it really dastardly enough that it warrants being shut down in schools because people don’t believe in it?
When I first heard that some schools did not allow Valentine’s Day festivities due to the lack of belief, that kinda confused me. What is not to believe? The holiday is not one that is set on a huge religious holiday that might be a turn off for some. It is merely a holiday designed to spread love, which is something the world desperately needs right now. There’s hardly anything malicious about it all. In fact, the spirit of Valentine’s Day is one that should be emulated.
Valentine’s Day is not just for romantic relationships. It is a spreading of love to all those around you- whether it be significant others, family, friends, acquaintances, or just random strangers who might need a little love to brighten their day. It’s a time to reignite the compassion for humanity that the busy world frequently neglects. The world needs love more than ever and this is the perfect reminder of that and a launching point for something great and simple we can do for all of the Earth.
You don’t have to do a lot. I’m not asking you to forgive all those who have wronged you, drop all your grudges, or make homemade valentines for your entire office (although that would be really sweet). Rome wasn’t built in a day, after all. Just let those around you- those that inhabit your everyday life- that you love them and cherish what they bring to your life. Instead of talking behind someone’s back, look on their bright side and throw them a compliment or two. Maybe even huge your mother-in-law! I’m sure she’d deserve it. A small step in the love direction will make a big impact in the future.
So now that Valentine’s Day has gone and past another year, keep in mind all the lessons it has taught us. It is not some scary holiday that only romantic partners can enjoy. It is a reminder that we all can spread love and compassion to one another. Whether it be tacky little paper valentines, a hug, or a kind word, a little love goes a long way. I’ll start us off: You’re a beautiful individual who has a unique purpose in the world and is going to fill their space like nobody else can. Now it’s your turn. I’ll “love” you to it.
