Where in the World Should You Go?

Deciding where to Study Abroad

Where in the World Should You Go?

So you've decided to study abroad! Now it's time to choose where in the world you want to go! There are several factors that you should consider when choosing your country and even the university you will attend. There are four things you should consider when choosing where to go.

1. Do you have academic requirements that require you to go to a certain country or region?

For me, because I am an International Studies major with a minor in Japanese it made sense for me to go to Japan to improve my language skills and fulfill the credits I needed for my major. Remember, you're still going to school just in a different country so think about how the country you are going to will improve you academically.

2. Are you comfortable with being in a country where you might not know the language?

If going abroad is already a big step out of your comfort zone think about how comfortable you are with not knowing the language. However, not knowing the language should not have you crossing out amazing countries from your list. Before I went to Japan, I knew a little bit of the language but I still struggled a lot. It got better as I adjusted and there were plenty of people around that were willing to help me!

3. Are you more of a city or country person?

When picking a university research the town surrounding it. I was in the middle of Tokyo and I loved being in the hustle and bustle of the city. There was always something to do and the transportation was really convenient. The city isn't for everyone though, so you should scope out different parts of the country and see what best suits your needs (maybe you'll end up in a cute beach town!)

4. The cost of living

Studying in Thailand is probably going to be a lot cheaper than studying in the middle of London. Researching the average cost of living prices in different countries may help you narrow down the place you want to study.

I think these are the four most important points you should think about when choosing where to study abroad. This part was the most fun for me when I decided to go abroad. Who knows, you may discover a country you never even thought of! Really do your research and have fun with it!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
