"Wake up in the morning feeling like..."
There are very few people who can't finish this lyric (whether they want to or not). Kesha is known for her less than moderate use of glitter, party girl persona, and electronic pop melodies. In early 2014, Kesha dipped out of the public eye during a stay in rehab for an eating disorder. Over a year later, people are questioning where the party girl has gone.
According to her lawyer, her career is over.
In October 2014, Kesha filed a lawsuit against Dr. Luke, her producer, alleging (among other things) that he drugged, raped and emotionally abused her. According to a Billboard Magazine article, Kesha's career was filled with unhealthy interactions with Dr. Luke. The article details more of his abusive and manipulative behavior leading up to the lawsuit.
"Now, after entering a rehab center in Illinois for what she says was related to an eating disorder, and after allegedly being told by doctors that continued contact with Dr. Luke would be 'life threatening,' she is suing him as well as affiliate record companies who are charged with having 'ratified Dr. Luke's unlawful conduct by covering up his actions and forcing Ms. Sebert to continue to work with him despite his abusive behavior.'"
Unfortunately, Dr. Luke lashed back, quickly filing a countersuit and preventing Kesha from releasing any more music. According to an article from the Huffington Post, Kesha's lawyer, Mark Geragos, says her career is in danger. The singer is stuck, "unless the court issues this injunction, Kesha will suffer irreparable harm, plummeting her career past the point of no return," Geragos says.
A lawyer for Dr. Luke released a statement in response. Christine Lepera said:
"We understand that Kesha has filed a lawsuit of her own against Dr. Luke, though we have not yet seen it. Undoubtedly, Kesha’s lawsuit is nothing more than a continuation of her bad and offensive acts. We are confident that Dr. Luke will prevail in all matters, and that our client will be awarded substantial damages for this malicious conduct."
I find it interesting to point out that Dr. Luke's lawyer would accuse Kesha of "bad and offensive acts" when it was clearly part of the image she portrayed for the media (one that was encouraged by her record label). Many people do not know that she was planning on attending Barnard College in New York before securing her record deal (which has a lower acceptance rate and is harder to get into than NYU).
Those who support Kesha have been using the hashtag "#FreedomForKesha" to show their support on social media.
