Attending the high school my dad taught at was an interesting experience. There are definitely a lot of people out there who can relate to having their parent at school every day, being a student in their class and just growing up with teachers as parents. Shout out to those who understand the good times and bad, and for the classmates who never knew what it was like, welcome to the inside life of seeing your parent every day at school.
Never Stepping Foot in a School Bus
School starts at 7:30 a.m., but beating traffic and arriving early to set up the classroom is necessary, so departure time was 6:30 a.m., not a second later.
Having a Perfect Attendance Record
The second the bell rings, you have to sprint to the next class or else you could have surprise run-in with your parent when you're supposed to be at your desk.
Skipping Class? Don't Even Think About It
If you think being late to class is bad, try missing class and having the luxury of your teacher walking down the hallway to your parent's classroom to let them know.
And now, the experience of having your parent as your own teacher...
Having to Sit in Class...
When You Really Feel Like This...
You have to be as bright and happy as humanly possible, so you don't get in trouble for not being excited to learn.
Getting Called on in Class
We've all had the terrifying experience of spacing out at the exact moment you're called on for a question. Besides the embarrassment of saying you don't know, you also have about 20 pairs of eyes on you, watching your interaction with your parent.
The "My Dog Ate My Homework" Excuse Can Never be Used
Even if it did actually happen, there will always be extra papers in their brief case, just in case of emergency.
"Do You Automatically Get A's?"
I wish it was that easy, but once your parent is your teacher you have to work even harder.
My own personal experience with my chemistry teacher-parent...
Conducting Experiments Anytime
OK, maybe we don't have all of these fancy chemicals at home, but I have made quite a lot of slime and elephant's toothpaste in my youth.
"Do You Know How to Cook Meth?"
Living in a House Full of Chemistry.
The second you walk into my home, you know we eat, breathe and sleep science.
Is there ever a better time to review noble gases than when you're washing your hair?As my dad says, cooking is chemistry!
Maybe this is why we're always fashionably late. I never really needed to know the time anyway.
Having my dad as my chemistry teacher was a really cool experience. We both learned a lot, cried and laughed. Having two parents that are science teachers is a whole other world for me, and I wouldn't want it any other way, especially with such understanding and influential parents who are also great teachers.
