On August 10th, 1999 my life changed. Depending on the day, I can say it was for the better. Ky'leana Maechel Allen was born. My kid sister.
We're 5 years apart, but that didn't have much effect on how close we became. I consider her to be my best friend. She's been around for a VERY long time, and I don't see that changing any time soon.
As the older sister, it is my duty to protect, teach and show her the ropes. It's my job to do all that I can so that she can succeed in this world that we call life. Be a listening ear, a shoulder to cry on, offer advice and point her in the right direction.
As we both entered middle school and high school, we had to go our separate ways. It was time for us to become our own person. Form different friendships and relationships. Naturally, as the older sister, I had the "privilege" to get a taste of life before her. I graduated high school and went off to college.
I was able to take a step into the "real world" first. I was able to experience the freedom away from parents and teachers. I know what it's like to take on the responsibility of having to take care of yourself. I know first hand what the pressure will be like to manage a social life, school work and sleep. (Not enough hours in the day people!)
However this is part of the process of growing up. Graduating high school and going to college, it's part of the process. College applications, ACT scores, college visits, FASFA, it's just the beginning.
She's growing up. It's her turn to experience life outside of parents, high school and older siblings. She's a senior, and she's finding herself. She's formed her friendships and relationships. She's joined extracurricular activities. I have to have faith and hope, I know that she will make smart decisions. I know that she will try new things. I know that she will also struggle and stress out.
Regardless of all that, I will ALWAYS be there for her. If she needs advice, a listening ear or someone to just vent too, I will be a phone call or visit away.
