Growing up, I thought my parents gave me siblings just to torture me—come on ma, who needs four kids? My sisters and I were at each other's throats all through childhood and thought that we couldn't be more different. It wasn't until we got older (and moved away to college) that we began to appreciate each other and cherish the time spent together. Now, when I'm home we spend every second together—right up to them letting my hands go at the airport gate. It's in this time that I've realized I wouldn't be able to live without them, and while they may be sisters by chance, they're my best friends by choice.
1. You can always be your weirdest self around her.
Your sister is entrusted with the ugliest of Snapchats, lamest of dance moves and dumbest of decisions. She may laugh at you, but she'll never judge you.
2. Distance has no impact on your relationship.
As soon as you’re together again it’s like no time has passed.
3. Your happiness is her happiness.
Your sister is one of the only people in the world who is genuinely happy that you’re happy.
4. Your inside jokes span an entire lifetime.
No one can make you laugh like your sister can. Not a giggle either—a full-blown, skip your workout today because you’re already covered laugh.
5. She’ll listen to every detail of your problems—because she actually cares.
6. You suffer through family events together.
She’s one of the only people who you don’t have to explain your family to, and she knows how to navigate the holidays just as well as you do.
7. You grew up loving the same things.
You went through the Hilary Duff “Metamorphosis” phase together and she’ll still belt out the lyrics when it pops up on your Pandora shuffle. Same goes for the Backstreet Boys, *NSYNC, and anything Hannah Montana.
8. She’s not afraid to call you out when you’re lying.
You can lie to the world but you can’t slip anything past your sister.
9. She’ll like every Instagram picture and Facebook post.
It comes with the job description. That's like, two right there.
10. She always knows what you’re thinking—even before you say it.
11. She’s been by your side through every single breakup.
She knows names, faces, who to love and who to hate.
12. Her closet is your closet.
Whether you have the same style or are even the same size—it doesn't matter. What’s hers is yours.
14. Your favorite wine, chocolate, and ice cream—she knows them all.
She knows your guilty pleasures and is all too happy to join in on your pickle and brownie bite binge.
15. She’ll defend you to the bitter end—even if you’re wrong.
When it comes to your little brother, your parents, or the rude guy who corrected you at Starbucks—she's got your back.
16. She will always be honest with you.
Regardless of whether or not it will hurt your feelings, your sister is never afraid to be honest with you. Sometimes you need someone to tell you that dress makes you look like a Kardashian—in a bad way.
17. She’s in all of your favorite memories.
Your sister has been your A1 since Day 1 and you've never spent a holiday without her. That means she was there that time you fell into the lake or when you chugged mom's wine and snuck into the neighbor's hot tub.
18. Her advice is always exactly what you need to hear.
She can't fix all your problems, but she can promise that you'll never face them alone.
19. She knows you to your very core.
She knows all of your dreams and aspirations, as well as your secrets and your fears. She knows the struggles you face and stands by your side through any setback.
20. She’ll be there with you to the very end.
Friends come and go, but sisters are for life. Forget being buried beside your future husband, you’d rather park it beside your sister for eternity.
21. She’ll love you forever, no matter what.
Through the ups and downs, the awkward childhood phases, and finding yourself—your sister is the person you can turn to through it all. You’ve seen each other from every angle and will always love each other anyway. Face it, you couldn't get rid of her if you tried—but why would you ever want to?
If ever there is tomorrow when we're not together, there is something you must always remember: you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think. But the most important thing is: even if we're apart, I will always be with you.
