It does not matter where you are. It may occur in a public place, a fancy dinner party, in the shower or even lying in bed — there are endless possibilities. And when your jam comes on, nothing stops you from busting a move.
It may start out small. Maybe it’s just a tap of your foot or a shake of your head. Then, you start to amp it up and get more into it. Your shoulders join your head. Maybe you start to shimmy or even possibly, partake in some weaving and bobbing action, as if you’re in an NSYNC pop video.
Leg movement accompanies your foot, and if by some miracle you have stayed stationary up until this point, that all changes now. In tandem, your legs, feet, shoulders, head and hands move simultaneously. Do you know what that means?
You are officially dancing.
It may not be a beautiful sight, but regardless, you are still doing it. That song penetrated your psyche and got you grooving to the beat or tempo. It wouldn’t allow you to stay still. You could have tried all you wanted, but resistance was futile. It wasn’t going to happen.
Acceptance and embracing the moment is the best thing you can do.
Currently, the song that gets me moving is “My House” by Flo Rida. No matter where I am, I have to dance or at least move a little to this jam.
Let me set the scene: I’m driving through downtown Winston-Salem, NC when my song comes on. How do you think I’ll react? Well, since I’m seated, bucked in and driving, I can’t bust out all of my moves.
Still, I had some solid head bopping and should shimmying. I also had some weaving and single hand motions like you have never seen before. The best part of my performance though was my belting out of the lyrics and the facial expressions I made, as I pretended to perform a concert for my windshield.
Nothing beat looking over my left shoulder to see the driver right next to me watching and laughing his head off. I had conveniently forgotten that when my jam came on, I was in public. I was in sight of all to see my super awesome yet greatly embarrassing moment. My brain had nicely turned off that fact for me. Instead, it had just given me tunnel vision to focus on enjoying the song and dancing as best as I could while stuck in a car.
I, of course, made my circumstance work to the best of my ability and rocked out to my song. I also rocked out so that six or so other people were able to watch my jam out session.
I’ve realized though, that it does not matter. Who cares! If anything, I probably gave each and every one of them a great laugh for the day. They had a good story to tell their friends and family. At the very least a smile must have crossed their faces as they watching me singing (rocking out) to myself in my car.
Everyone needs to let loose every once in a while. Let that song make you act a little silly and dance in random places. Bust a move and don’t care. Be a little foolish and enjoy the song taking over.
We all have a song that will get us shaking. That song will continuously change throughout your life and that’s the beauty of it all. Nothing stays stationary in this world, and nothing ever will.
