Many people look down on the county fair. They see it as a breeding ground for the local rednecks, who do nothing but chew tobacco and talk about guns. But in reality, it is quite the opposite. When you take a girl to the county fair, something magical happens.
She'll find the best food imaginable.
I've said it once and I'll say it again, I would gladly lay my life on the line if it meant I could have some deep fried Oreo's. How about some Boston Creme funnel cake? Or some peanut butter-chocolate mini donuts? Yeah, now I've got your mouth watering. These delicious delicacies and more can be found, readily available, at the fair.
She'll find the best gifts.
Whether it be a hand-painted candy dish, salt and pepper shakers in the shape of an adorable pig, or some dog bones for our furry friends, some of the best gifts I've ever given have come from the fair. The people there put their hearts and souls into everything they do, and it shows. So go out and support them.
She is thrust into a whole new learning experience.
There's so much to learn in so little time. Whether you're learning how to line dance, make butter, ride a horse, or maybe it's something a little more personal, like learning responsibility or humility, there's no better place to do it than at the fair. And while it may seem daunting at first, the fair is the perfect place to get out there and learn.
She forms the strongest friendships.
I have formed some of my closest friendships at the fair. I have found sisters, by choice and not blood, whom I would do anything for, and I know they'd do the same. It also helps that they're my neighbors. I formed a bond with an elderly vendor this year, who promised to come back next year just so he could see me again. But none of this would have been possible without the fair. You meet people who are willing to drop everything to help one another. And even if you don't know everyone's name, there is this camaraderie in the air, so that even if you don't know their name, you know their smile, and that's what matters.
She meets the most hardworking and dedicated people.
I could open a thesaurus and list every single positive adjective here, and it still wouldn't be enough. The people I have met at the fair are the funniest, smartest, kindest, most hard working, dedicated, reliable, responsible, passionate, and loving people I have ever had the pleasure to know. I have witnessed kids with tear filled eyes congratulate their competitor because they know that friendship is more important than competition. The people at the fair are of a special breed; they are what make the fair so special
I could go on and on about the fair, and how much it means to me, but I encourage you to experience it for yourself. Support your local 4H and FFA groups. Support your local fair when it comes to town, go out and have fun. Trust me, you won't regret it.
